Red-Headed Woodpeckers, May 10, 2017

ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday
R is for Red-headed Woodpeckers - cavity-nesting birds of North America

Booneville, Mississippi, USA, May 2, 2017
Red-headed Woodpeckers, Melanerpes aurifrons, live in the eastern and central parts of the United States and around the Great Lakes region of Canada. They may nest in natural tree cavities, or they can use their strong bills to dig out new nesting holes.

They catch insects in flight and also search for them on the ground. Other food sources are nuts, seeds, and fruit.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!
