Saturday's Critters, Camera Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Saturday's Critters and Camera Critters

We put this cover on the sofa to protect it from cat hair and claws, but Buzz-Girl just pulls up the edge, crawls behind it, turns around to stick her head out, and goes to sleep! As for her name: Once upon a time there was a tiny kitten with a loud buzzing purr. We named him Buzzy. Later we discovered that he was a she!

This is a hawk, but doesn't this pose make it look like a fat chicken? Well, except for those eyes and the hooked beak!

SWF Mistletoe, January 29, 2016

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 23, 2016

Last Saturday was sunny, but cold and windy. I made this photo through the sun roof of our car when we stopped at the post office. The greenery in the tree is the parasite plant Mistletoe.

Happy Friday!

Wild Bird Wednesday and ABC Wednesday
C is for Cathartes aura, Turkey Vultures
Cathartes aura, Turkey Vultures, Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 19, 2016
Turkey Vultures, Cathartes aura (aka Buzzards), range all across the United States except for the northernmost New England states. Vultures and other scavengers that eat dead animals help clean up the environment.

They live in forests, but are often seen soaring over fields and roads. Usually silent, they may hiss or grunt when feeding.

Hope you are having a good day!

Bookmobile, January 25, 2016

Lee County, Mississippi, USA, January 19, 2016

In this digital age, it is good to see that people are still interested in reading actual books.
The bookmobile service is much appreciated in rural areas where the nearest library is miles away. (Audio books and DVDs are also available).

Celebrating 75 years of service!

Happy Monday!

Lee County, Mississippi, USA, January 18, 2016
This old barn is still in use, but the horses and mules have been replaced by tractors. The main crops in this area are soybeans, cotton, and winter wheat.

This shed looks to be the same age as the barn, and it is still used for storage.

Have a blessed day!

Birds in a Tree, January 23, 2016

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, January 9, 2016
This small tree in a shopping center parking lot was full of birds, chirp, chirp, chirping! Most people were walking by without paying the slightest bit of attention. I guess they wondered why the crazy lady ran to her car to get her camera!

Some kind of Sparrow, maybe?

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 15, 2016

And visiting my bird feeders: Goldfinches!

The winter storm went by just a few miles north and west of us. The snow here was mixed with rain, so it quickly melted. I hope all of you in the storm's path are safe and warm.

Sky Watch Friday, January 22, 2016

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 20, 2016

The first of the week was sunny and very cold. Thankfully, when the clouds rolled in mid-week the temperature rose a few degrees so that we had fog and rain instead of sleet and snow. Though this may look like early morning fog, it was at mid-afternoon. The weather forecast for today (Friday) is rain mixed with snow.

Hope the weather is good where you are!

Buteo: Hawk, January 20, 2016

ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday
B is for Buteo - a genus of medium to large raptors with robust bodies and wide wings. In North America they are called Hawks, but in other parts of the world they are known as Buzzards.
Red-Tailed Hawk, Buteo jamaicensis, Lee County, Mississippi, USA, January 18, 2016

I was not sure which hawk this was until it flew and I saw its rusty-red tail. Red-Tailed Hawks can be found across most of the United States and Canada.

Spirea, January 18, 2016

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 17, 2016
Even though our temperatures are dropping below freezing at night, there are thousands of tiny buds on my Spirea shrub. (There are many different Spireas; I'm not sure of this one's name).

And a few blooms! It seems they open just a few blooms to test the weather in the Winter. Sometime in March they will sense that it is Spring and burst forth into full bloom. Thousands of tiny flowers will cover the shrub so that it looks like a large white ball!

Hope you have a wonderful week!

You see how steeply the land rises behind the barn. That is why this area of Mississippi is called the Tippah Hills.

ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday
A is for the American Robin
American Robin, Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, December 13, 2015
(getting a drink from my birdbath)

The American Robin, Turdus migratorius, can be found all across North America, migrating to the southern half of the USA in the Winter and going north into Canada for the Summer. They sing a series of notes, rising and falling in pitch: cheer-up, cheerily, cheer-up, cheerily. They are only distantly related to the European Robin.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Food Truck, January 12, 2016

Ruby Tuesday and Our World Tuesday

Ripley, Mississippi, USA, January 9, 2016

Food Trucks are the latest entries in the centuries-old history of street food. Here in the United States the Texas chuck wagons of the 1800s are given the credit for being the first 'food trucks.' In good weather there will be a long line of customers. Not so many on a rainy day like last Saturday.

Pork barbeque is very popular in our area. Food Trucks generally cook and sell the regional specialties, but gourmet restaurants are beginning to join in, too.

This one carries its barbeque cooker/smoker with it wherever it goes! If you look closely, you can see smoke coming from the chimney.

Have a wonderful day!

Saturday's Critters, Camera Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 1, 2015
I was looking at my photos to see what caught my attention at this time last year and found this Cardinal. He was looking at me as intently as I was looking at him!

Red-Tailed Hawk, Lee County, Mississippi, January 7, 2016

And from January this year - a Red-Tailed Hawk. Even though I was quite a distance away, pushing my zoom to the limit, I think this hawk saw me, too.

And since it is Saturday...
Tennessee River at Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, December 7, 2015
...you get another Great Blue Heron photo!
The water is so high, the Herons are the only ones that can use the pedestrian walkway beside the river. Thankfully, the actual river bank is still several feet higher than the water at this point.

Hope you have a beautiful week-end!

Floral Friday Fotos

Oxalis blooms are very small, but what they lack in size they make up for in hardiness, blooming almost non-stop.

Booneville, Mississippi, USA
Student Services Building, Northeast Mississippi Community College, Booneville, MS, USA

Booneville, located in the northeastern corner of Mississippi, has a population of about 10,000 people. The Community College, a two-year institution, was established in 1948. Students are trained in health sciences (nursing, etc.) and various technological fields, or they may take a wide variety of classes (math, history, literature, etc.) to transfer to a four-year college.

The Rails and Trails Museum occupies the old train depot built in 1913. It houses an extensive collection of historic records and artifacts.

Week's Favorite
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 6, 2016

Good thing this calf has on its winter coat as temperatures are dropping below freezing at night. (Yes, it does have shelter from the wind and rain, and has plenty of hay to eat).

Outside
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, January 7, 2016
