Mud Glorious Mud, October 7, 2015

ABC Wednesday, Wild Bird Wednesday, and Wednesday Waters

ABC Wednesday
M is for mud - wet soft earth
Waterloo, Alabama, USA, September 27, 2015

As the sign explains, mudflats created by varying water levels of the Tennessee River are teeming with small aquatic creatures - tasty treats for shorebirds.

Waterloo, Alabama, USA, September 27, 2015

Butterflies are able to get salt and other necessary minerals from mud.

And Cypress Trees need the periodic flooding of the mudflats to survive and flourish.

Now you know: Mud is more than just stuff you have to clean off your shoes!

Wild Bird Wednesday
Cormorant, Tishomingo State Park, Mississippi, USA, September 20, 2015

The Cormorant's usual habitat is along the coast, but they may be seen on inland lakes, rivers and swamps. The word "cormorant" is derived from the Latin corvus marinus, or "sea crow."

Cormorant, Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, October 5, 2015

Cormorants dive into the water to catch fish to eat. Afterward, they spread their wings to dry their feathers. (Though some scientists disagree about the purpose of this spread-wing behavior).

Wednesday Waters
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, October 5, 2015

Walkway leading down to a dock on Pickwick Lake.

Hope you are having a wonderful day!

  1. Thank you! Now I know why the good Lord gave us mud! To teach us digging, not only in the real mud, but also in the virtual mud of one's life.
    Have a great week,
