Great Blue Heron, Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, October 5, 2015 |
Yesterday we went birding at Pickwick Lake. This Great Blue Heron was perched on a nesting platform out in the lake. I'll have to wait until Spring to know if a Heron or an Osprey builds a nest there. Scientists believe birds stand on one leg to conserve body heat that is lost through their legs.
Have a beautiful day!

Great photo of the heron out on the platform in the water. I like the way you have captured the light striking up on the bird's face.
ReplyDeleteGreat shot - and even great balance by the bird!

Splendid!!
ReplyDeletePretty!!! And I love the name....Pickwick!!
ReplyDeleteHe looks like he's trying to claim that platform. Neat place. I've read that one leg thing before but had forgotten... Thanks for the reminder, a fun fact to know!
ReplyDeleteHow do they stand on one leg?
ReplyDeleteThanks for your visit and comment. I suppose they learn to balance on one leg just as a ballet dancer does - practice, practice, practice!
DeleteGreat capture Lea.
ReplyDeleteWonderful shot. I love seeing them stand on one leg like that!
