Great Blue Heron, October 6, 2015

Great Blue Heron, Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, October 5, 2015

Yesterday we went birding at Pickwick Lake. This Great Blue Heron was perched on a nesting platform out in the lake. I'll have to wait until Spring to know if a Heron or an Osprey builds a nest there. Scientists believe birds stand on one leg to conserve body heat that is lost through their legs.

Have a beautiful day!

  1. Great photo of the heron out on the platform in the water. I like the way you have captured the light striking up on the bird's face.

  4. He looks like he's trying to claim that platform. Neat place. I've read that one leg thing before but had forgotten... Thanks for the reminder, a fun fact to know!

    1. Thanks for your visit and comment. I suppose they learn to balance on one leg just as a ballet dancer does - practice, practice, practice!
