Wildflower Wednesday
The fourth Wednesday of each month is Wildflower Wednesday
Meadow Beauty, Lee County, Mississippi, USA, August 16, 2015 |
I think this is Maryland Meadow Beauty, Rhexia mariana. (Virginia Meadow Beauty is very similar). The flower color ranges from a pale pink to a darker pink that comes close to blue/purple.
They prefer moist soil. I found these growing at the edge of a pond. The leaves are narrow and grow opposite each other along the stem. The fruit/seed pods were described by Thoreau as looking like little cream pitchers.
They can be found in most parts of the eastern United States and as far west as Texas.

What a GANGLY and GRACEFUL bird the Heron is, I just love their bright yellow button eyes and their knobbly knees.
ReplyDeleteWe have one that lives in a local parkland but occasionally takes flight and visit local gardens that have a pond, hoping for a feast of an exotic fish such as a Koi Carp, that are popular in our neighbourhood.
So we often have Henry the Heron perching on our shed eyeing up next door's pond, hoping for a snack...Up to now he's not been successful, I'm pleased to say!
Best wishes,
Di,

that meadow beauty is rather a delight!
ReplyDeleteFabulous flower I have never seen. And what a handsome heron!
ReplyDeleteDon't you just love wild flowers....and wild birds?
ReplyDeleteLove those Great Blue Herons! I saw so many of them in Florida when I was there for a month last winter. They're fascinating to watch as they waddle, take off, and land. Meadow Beauty is lovely. It seems like a wildflower the hummingbirds would like.
ReplyDeleteFour great shots of the Heron Linda.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos Lea. I have never seen that wildflower before. It is very pretty. The heron is a real beauty! Love how you have caught him taking off.
ReplyDeletenifty birds and flowers

Pretty flowers and great captures of the Heron! Enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteWildflowers and herbs have always been such favorites of mine. What we have (and don't have!) here in the desert is vastly different from back east, and that's been a little disappointing for me. LOVE your wildflower shots! The heron shots are great as well. Wonderful post.
ReplyDeleteOh your pictures are just gorgeous! Love the wildflowers!
ReplyDeleteNice wildflowers, and great pics of the heron.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't familiar with Meadow Beauty--what sweet little flowers! Great photos of the heron!
ReplyDeleteWe have great blue herons here, too, and I love sneaking up and taking their photos.

Hi Lea,
ReplyDeleteIt was fun looking at your other posts one the way to this one. I love the one with the bumblebee! It's fun when we can see all the details like that. I am not familiar with your wildflower. It's a dainty looking plant. I can see the little pitchers.
Thanks for stopping by my blog!
I don't know that wildflower either. The little seed containers really do look like little pitchers. Your heron pictures make me want to go pack to the park to see if I might get a little closer. They're fabulous birds.
