Booneville City Park, Booneville, Mississippi, USA |
If you look closely at this light pole at Booneville City Park, you can see a nesting cavity just underneath the lights.
The nesting cavity was probably made by Woodpeckers, but other birds have moved in and made it their own.
I'm not sure what they are. At first I thought they were Starlings, but Starlings are darker, aren't they? Can you help me identify these birds?
Have a wonderful week-end!

ReplyDeleteWhat a neat find, I think they looks like juvie Bluebirds. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Have a happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteHello Eileen,
DeleteI think you (and others) who suggested juvenile Bluebirds are correct. I thought they were adult birds because they were bringing food to the nest. Then as I read more about Bluebird behavior, I discovered that juvenile Bluebirds will sometimes help their parents feed a new nest of babies. How wonderful! Teenage babysitters!
I haven't been back to the park to observe the nest lately because our weather has been so hot - high 90s. Even the mornings and late afternoons are still hot and humid. We are doing our walking in the air-conditioned comfort of the Mall.
Hope you are having a wonderful day!
Lea
All I can tell you they are NOT Starlings but well spotted. Have a wonderful weekend.
ReplyDeletehome sweet home!!!!
ReplyDeleteI hope eileen is right, bluebirds would be great neighbors!

Whatever they are -- they are very clever to let someone else do all the work! Fun! Happy Critter Day!
ReplyDeleteThey are very pretty and I think they are young bluebirds. too. Great photos!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your help with ID - juvenile Bluebirds.
DeleteHave a wonderful day!

You did well to spot them and zoom in on them with your camera, I hope you can get shots of the young birds too.
ReplyDeleteWow...first off, to have actually spotted this is incredible. There IS a hint of blue in the one, but not sure if they're bluebirds. I would think if they were there'd be more blue on them since they're obviously getting ready to nest. Or maybe they're young ones that have fledged from the cavity. Who knows. If there is a possibility to keep an eye on the nesting area, time will show more color if they ARE bluebirds.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this post with us bird enthusiasts this week at I'd Rather B Birdin'.
Several people suggested juvenile Bluebirds, and I think that is the correct ID. I learned that juvenile Bluebirds sometimes help their parents feed a new nest of babies, and I think that is what these two birds were doing when I spotted them.
