Cooler Weather, August 28, 2015

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, August 26, 2015
We've had beautiful blue skies this week, and 81F (27C) is much more enjoyable than the upper 90s (36C) we had earlier this month.

Fence with Dove, August 27, 2015

Mourning Dove, Lee County Mississippi, USA, August 21, 2015

You know how I like my fences - with birds on them!

I love the way the Mourning Dove ruffles up its feathers when it is preening.

Here it is at the base of the fence.

Wildflowers and Herons, August 26, 2015

Wildflower Wednesday, Wild Bird Wednesday, and ABC Wednesday

Wildflower Wednesday
The fourth Wednesday of each month is Wildflower Wednesday
Meadow Beauty, Lee County, Mississippi, USA, August 16, 2015

I think this is Maryland Meadow Beauty, Rhexia mariana. (Virginia Meadow Beauty is very similar). The flower color ranges from a pale pink to a darker pink that comes close to blue/purple.

They prefer moist soil. I found these growing at the edge of a pond. The leaves are narrow and grow opposite each other along the stem. The fruit/seed pods were described by Thoreau as looking like little cream pitchers.

They can be found in most parts of the eastern United States and as far west as Texas.

Village Chapel, August 20, 2015

Jackson, Tennessee, USA, July 22, 2015

The Village Chapel is part of the Casey Jones Village tourist attraction in Jackson, Tennessee.

 .

The Casey Jones Village also has an old school house, an art gallery, a gift shop, a railroad museum, a Pullman train car, and a buffet-style restaurant. It's an interesting place to visit, and the restaurant food is very good.

Birds and Butterflies, August 19, 2015

ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday

ABC Wednesday
F is for Fritillary Butterflies
Gulf Fritillary Butterfly, Prentiss county, Mississippi, USA, July 25, 2015

The Gulf Fritillary, Agraulis vanillae, gets its name from its migration across the Gulf of Mexico. Its range is from Argentina in South America, throughout Central America and the Caribbean Islands, and all the way north to the southern United States.

Gulf Fritillary on Butterfly Bush

It is sometimes called the Passion Butterfly because its larva feeds exclusively on various kinds of Passionflowers.

Wild Bird Wednesday
Canada Geese, Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, August 16, 2015

The Canada Goose, Branta Canadensis, is common in wetlands all across Canada and the United States.

Those in the north migrate south for the Winter. Those in milder climates tend to stay there all year.

Many Canada Geese that live on lakes in city parks have become semi-domesticated.

White-Tailed Deer, August 18, 2015

White-Tailed Deer, Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 14, 2015

I was surprised to see a Deer in my back yard last Friday.  Our dog must have been asleep on the front porch.  She does not tolerate intruders in her territory when she is awake.

It was eating the sunflower seeds we put on the ground for the Doves. I made these photos through my dining room window.

Then it found some fallen fruit under the apple trees.

Yummy!

Hope you have a wonderful day!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, August 2015

Northeast Mississippi, USA, zone 7

I rescued this Butterfly Milkweed from the side of the road in June just minutes ahead of the Highway Department mowing machines   I am so pleased to see it blooming again.

Insects have been munching on my Coneflowers.

I was late planting the Sunflower seeds, but they are coming along beautifully.

Butterfly Bush, Buddleia

Phlox

I sowed a packet of Zinnia seeds, mixed colors. I think the pink ones are the prettiest, but I have yellow ones and white ones, too.

Storm Clouds, August 14, 2015

We thought for sure we would have rain, but it passed us by. But the clouds did bring cooler temperatures, very welcome in the heat of Summer.

Turkey Vulture, August 13, 2015

Turkey Vulture, Lee county, Mississippi, USA, August 10, 2015

I expected this Vulture to fly as soon as we stopped the car on the side of the road, but it just sat there on the pasture fence looking at us.  And a very interesting fence it is.  I think the iron rod construction on the left is (or was) a gate.

I wanted to get an in-flight photo, so we beeped the car horn. Still it sat.

My dear husband got out of the car and yelled 'shoo' at it, so I could get the photo I wanted!

Egret, August 12, 2015

Wild Bird Wednesday and
ABC Wednesday
E is for Egret
Great Egret, Casmerodius albus, Lee county, Mississippi, USA, July 23, 2015

Formerly known as the "American Egret," "Large Egret," "White Egret," "Great White Egret," and "Great White Heron," this bird's official name in North America is now Great Egret (National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds).

Great Egrets can be found in freshwater and salt marshes and ponds along the coastal areas of the United States and in the Mississippi and Ohio River Valleys. They wade in shallow water or stalk their prey from the bank, eating fish, frogs, small snakes, various small aquatic animals, and insects.

They are large birds standing at least 1 meter (over 3 feet) tall with yellow bills and black legs and feet.  In addition to other North American Egrets, the Great Egret's relatives can be found in Europe, Africa and Asia.

Sunflower, August 10, 2015

Sunflower, Prentiss county, Mississippi, USA

I'm not sure exactly which Sunflower this is as I got it from a packet of mixed seeds. The plant is just over waist-high and branching to make several heads.  I am a bit disappointed in it as the blooms are a very pale yellow.  Other Sunflowers I have grown were brilliant yellow, almost orange.  Whatever the color, I'm glad to see it growing and blooming!

Unknown Birds, August 8, 2015

Booneville City Park, Booneville, Mississippi, USA

If you look closely at this light pole at Booneville City Park, you can see a nesting cavity just underneath the lights.

The nesting cavity was probably made by Woodpeckers, but other birds have moved in and made it their own.

I'm not sure what they are.  At first I thought they were Starlings, but Starlings are darker, aren't they? Can you help me identify these birds?
