Willy Nilly Friday 5, Sky Watch Friday,
and on Saturday, Saturday's Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

1. A Sunny Day! (Sky Watch Friday)
Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, January 27, 2019
We took advantage of last Sunday's sunny skies to visit Shiloh National Military Park.

2. The Most Interesting Thing I have Seen This Week
Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, January 27, 2019
Burls are large growths on trees that have a variety of causes: an injury, a bacteria, or a fungus are the most common.

3. A New Bird Feeder
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 25, 2019
We buy these metal mesh bird feeders because the squirrels gnaw holes in the plastic ones to get to the birdseed. The package says Squirrel Resistant - there is no such thing as Squirrel Proof!

There are hooks on the lid for easy opening to fill with sunflower seed. (The mesh is too large for small seeds). There is a perch around the bottom edge, but many of the smaller birds cling to the metal mesh to pull the seeds through the holes.

And the metal mesh collapses for easy storage during the Summer months. We had to buy a new one last week because something (a raccoon?) tore up one of our older ones.

4. Cows (Saturday's Critters)
Lee County, Mississippi, USA, January 28, 2019
If that cow looks like it has three (or four) front legs, it's because there is a calf on the other side!

5. Need Help with Bird ID (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 8, 2019
I think this is a Pine Warbler, Setophaga pinus, but I am not sure.

In this view you can see the bars on its wings. Any help with ID is appreciated!

Have a wonderful day!

  3. ...a beautiful dappled blue sky.
...you sure could turn a big bowl out of that burl.
...I need to try one of these.
...my mother always said if cows were laying down that it was going to rain.
    ...I'm no help here.

  9. Hello, I love the black cows. The bird feeder is nice, I hope the squirrels stay away. I think you are right with the Pine Warbler id, not sure what other yellow birds could be in your area. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post today. Happy Saturday and have a great weekend.

  10. I was looking at a smaller burl in our forest the other day!
We welcome the squirrels. What the heck. I gave up!

  11. Lovely shots of the pine warbler! The tree almost looks like a face. If there was a knob just beyond view on the other side, there would be two eyes and a very BIG nose! :-)

  12. I haven't seen a tree with a big bulge like that before. Interesting

  13. Good luck with the feeder. Last year I bought a model that was supposed to be squirrel proof. One day I looked out and a squirrel was inside it!
