Wildflower Wednesday, August 22, 2018

The fourth Wednesday of each month is Wildflower Wednesday!

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 20, 2018
American Beautyberry, Callicarpa americana, is a native shrub of the southeastern United States. It is easy to grow in full sun or part shade in zones 6 - 10. In the coldest areas of its hardiness zone, Beautyberry may die down to the ground in the Winter, but will come up again in the Spring.

The blooms, appearing in late Spring or early Summer, are tiny and easy to overlook. They are pollinated by bees and other small insects.

Beautyberry shrubs will give you fresh color in your garden in the Autumn. Ongoing research shows that Beautyberries may have medicinal uses. But leave them for the birds and other wildlife. Do not eat them yourself as their effect on humans has not been fully evaluated.

Happy Wildflower Wednesday!

  4. I added the hybrid 'Pearl Glam' last year--two of them. They did die back to the ground, but came back. I'm in zone 5, but they have the straight species at the Arboretum here in town, so I thought I'd give it a try. I think the hybrid is slightly more winter hardy. Lovely shrubs!

  5. My two Beauty-berries are in deep, deep shade under an oak tree and beside a big boulder. The don't seem to mind their location at all. Mine are not as ripe as yours.
