3. Did You Know?
"In the midst of Canada's forested terrain looms an unlikely expanse of the world's most northerly active sand dunes. What forces of nature created this rare ecosystem which hosts life found nowhere else on earth?"
Booneville, Mississippi, USA, December 7, 2017 |
4. Good Food
For a quick, easy meal:
Boneless, fully cooked ham steak (from refrigerated meat section of the grocery store)
Small can pineapple (chunks or slices)
Brown sugar (generous sprinkle)
Place fully cooked ham in a baking dish. Sprinkle generously with brown sugar. Pour juice from the canned pineapple around the edges of the ham. Arrange pineapple on top. Bake at 350℉ for 15 or 20 minutes.
Serve with your favorite vegetables. We like peas and corn.
4 servings. Left-over ham makes a good sandwich the next day!

...27F is a heat wave, he be frozen stiff up here, there's a Booneville in New York, I never could understand pineapple on ham, so that's where our Great Blue Heron have gone.
ReplyDeletegreat shot of the heron! the ham dinner does sound yummy, and easy! cute sculpture in front of the fire dept! love those uhaul facts! thank you for linking lea and have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteImagine geography lessons on the side of a U Haul truck!! I am glad you used the term "skim of ice." I used it at work the other day and nobody had ever heard of it.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos!!
Love the heron and I giggled at the fireman -- perfect location for him! Had no idea about the sand dunes -- amazing where you find "learning" these days! Ha! Fun post. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteI am with you, Lea, that is an unusual sculpture. I'd love to run across something like that. Sorry you didn't have any of our snow..I could send you some, if you like.. hehe
ReplyDeleteThe heron looks cold!
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised to hear about sand dunes in the Canadian forest! Very unusual. Wonderful capture of the heron!
ReplyDeleteI had a friend in transit from Virginia to Florida when that storm hit, and cousins who were supposed to fly out of Orlando yesterday. I was holding my breath for them yesterday. I lived in Tampa for two years so I know what cold temperatures (it's 5 above where I live right now going down to -4 tomorrow morning with wind gusts up to 40 mph) do for places not built for them. Hope it warms up for you soon.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recipe. I could probably even handle that and win some brownie points!
ReplyDeleteYou can even learn something new by reading a U-Haul. Go figure. - Margy
ReplyDeleteHello, I like the mural of the moose on the moving truck. The Heron is beautiful, great shot. I think our lake is icing up now too. Thank you so much for linking up your post! Happy Saturday, enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteI thought that fireman sculpture was a snowman until I enlarged it. Droolin with that ham steak...yum!
ReplyDeleteGreat heron photo!
What a yummy post!!!! Even eye candy!!! Happy New Year! P.S. we're at -23 C. this a.m.!
ReplyDeleteIt's so interesting about the sand eco system in Canada! Isn't the world a fascinating place! Loved your heron shot, and what a cute fireman!
ReplyDeleteFun post and love the Heron photo! Awesome!
ReplyDeleteHappy Week ahead to you,

Love that beautiful Heron and seeing the ice all the way as far South as MS! It was fun to read the side of the U Haul truck too! A fun post!
ReplyDeletewhat a great week! I would love to try your recipe, but with turkey instead of bacon ;)
ReplyDeleteA terrific variety of shots! The fireman is really cute to see.
ReplyDeleteWonderful highlights. I love the Great Blue Heron. Wherever I travel in the U.S., I seem to see them--which I guess isn't that surprising as they have such a wide range in North America. Hard to believe some of them overwinter in Wisconsin and Maine, while others of the same species spend their winters in Texas, Florida, and Cuba! Your ham dish looks very tasty!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for joining us birders this week at I'd Rather B Birdin'. Hope you can return again throughout 2018. Of course I love the heron...
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed reading your post! Great Blue Herons are so interesting and I love your photo but in this post, my favorite thing was the fireman sculpture. Hope you are enjoying the first weekend of 2018.
ReplyDeleteInteresting 5 bits...I cannot get my act together to join anything these days but enjoy others.
