Willy Nilly Friday 5, Sky Watch Friday, Floral Friday Fotos, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

1. Cotton Fields (Sky Watch Friday)
Lee County, Mississippi, USA, July 26, 2017
The cotton is blooming!

We have had scorching hot days with a few late afternoon thunderstorms this week.

2. Elvis
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, July 20, 2017
This Guitar sculpture is in front of Lawhon Elementary School where Elvis attended school in the 1940s.

Nearby is a plaque in memory of Mrs. J. C. Grimes, his 5th grade teacher. Mrs. Grimes was a wonderful teacher who loved and encouraged all her students. I was blessed to have her for 5th grade in 1960.

3. Bird! (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 25, 2017
Guess who decided to build her nest in a hanging basket on my front porch?

A Carolina Wren!

4. Shiloh National Military Park
Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, July 21, 2017
This National Park commemorates the American Civil War Battle of Shiloh, April 6-7 1862.

It is a very peaceful place to visit now 155 years later. However, a few times during the year, they celebrate special events with a cannon firing demonstration!

If you do the driving tour of the park, watch for deer!

5. A New Purchase (Floral Friday Fotos)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 26, 2017
Crossandra 'Orange Marmalade'

Crossandra is a tropical plant that can be grown as a houseplant. I plan to bring it indoors at the first hint of cooler weather in September.

Happy Friday!

  2. Beautiful summer in your area and your new flower is my favorite color. It's cool to learn that bit of trivia about Elvis (and about the encouraging teacher you both had!).

  4. Nice collection. I was surprised by Elvis' grade school but I don't know why.

  5. Wow, you and Elvis had the same 5th grade teacher!!? How cool is that?

  6. I enjoyed this on so many levels. First, I work in Binghamton, New York, where Rod Serling (Twilight Zone) grew up and he was inspired by his 7th grade teacher who taught him back in 1937 (she died in 2002). How fortunate you were to have that kind of experience. And second, I have never seen a cotton plant close up in bloom. I understand they start out white and turn red, but don't know if that is true or not.

  7. That's cool that you and Elvis had the same 5th grade teacher. Nice photos of the bird and the deer. The cotton field, I have never seen one. Must be interesting to see it grow. Thanks for sharing this post and have a wonderful weekend.

  8. I've only driven through Mississippi. I think I need to spend more time there, doing some sightseeing--maybe in February or March. ;-)

  9. Great photos. We had a Carolina Wren hanging out in our backyard for a bit early in the Spring. I love their cheerful call.

  12. LOVE the deer photos...enjoyed reading about Elvis, and what a sweet piece of nature that you have a Carolina Wren nesting on your porch!!! I'd be thrilled, and probably get nothing else done around the house except for watching the progress!!

Thanks so much for sharing this bit of your life of birding with wonderful narration and linking in this week at I'd Rather B Birdin'.
