Chipping Sparrow, May 31, 2017

Wild Bird Wednesday, Wednesday Around The World, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, May 16, 2017
Chipping Sparrows, Spizella passerina, can be found across most of North America. Many of them are migratory, traveling north to Canada in the Summer and then south again to the United States in the Winter. Chipping Sparrows in the southern United States are all-year residents. They eat seeds, insects, and small fruit.

Have a wonderful day!

End of the Month View, May 30-31, 2017

Our World Tuesday and End of the Month View

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 29, 2017
I rescued this Milkweed (Butterfly Weed) from the side of the road just ahead of the highway department mowing machines a few years ago. I am so glad it is happy growing in my garden.

This Coneflower 'Pow Wow Wild Berry' is a recent purchase. Since it is a perennial I am hoping to enjoy its blooms for many years to come.

Another recent purchase, 'Dolly Parton,' is a white Rose I rescued from the 'dead and dying' shelves at TSC (Tractor Supply Company). I was not sure it was going to live, but over the week-end I noticed new growth - Hurrah!

Rhoeo 'Stripe Me Pink' is a small ground cover type of plant. (Yes, another recent purchase!)
I set it out close to my Hostas.

The Hydrangeas are beginning to bloom. A strong rainstorm Saturday bent the stems over.

And the Day Lilies are blooming!

Happy Gardening!

Muskrats and Cardinals, May 27, 2017

Saturday's Critters, Camera Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Saturday's Critters and Camera Critters
Muskrat, Ondatra zibethicus - a semiaquatic rodent native to North America, an introduced species in parts of Europe, Asia, and South America

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, May 18, 2017
I was astonished to see two Muskrats swimming in a drainage ditch leading to a small marshy area. I was looking straight into bright sunlight for this photo. The other Muskrat was farther down the ditch in a semi-shady spot.

A Muskrat's fur is medium brown when dry, but looks much darker when wet. They were feeding on bits of vegetation floating in the water.

Moss Rose, May 26, 2017

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 23, 2017
Moss Rose, Portulaca grandiflora, are drought and heat tolerant plants native to South America. Plant in a sunny location.

They come in a variety of colors and bloom through the Summer months.

An old car tire works as a flower bed for me!

Happy Friday!

Mockingbird and Butterfly, May 25, 2017

Good Fences and Thankful Thursday

Good Fences Around The World
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, April 27, 2017
This fence, down an embankment on a busy highway, is the only one I have ever seen with concrete fence posts.

Northern Mockingbird

Mockingbirds display the white feathers on their wings and tail when they fly (an identifying characteristic).

And for Thankful Thursday

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 15, 2017
I am thankful for butterflies that, though tattered and torn, continue on, enjoying life every day.

They encourage me to greet each new day with joy and thanksgiving!

Have a wonderful day!

Thistles and Eagles, May 24, 2017

ABC Wednesday, Wildflower Wednesday, Wild Bird Wednesday, and
Wednesday Around The World

ABC Wednesday and Wildflower Wednesday
T is for Thistle - The common name for a group of flowering plants with very prickly leaves.

Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, April 11, 2017
Thistles are invasive, and are considered to be noxious weeds in fields and pastures.

It is a wildflower that only the bees and butterflies can love! If you put thistle seeds in your bird feeders, the Thistle family of plants produced those seeds. And aren't the blooms pretty!

Wild Bird Wednesday and Wednesday Around The World

Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, May 16, 2017
The Bald Eagles, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, nesting in Shiloh National Military Park raised two eaglets this year. I don't know if this is the proud papa or the wonderful mama, but they certainly have reason to be proud.

One of the eaglets is still staying close to the nest.

The other one, perhaps the older of the two, is venturing out onto the tree branches. The young eagles will be several years old before they have the white head and tail feathers of adults.

I hope you are having a wonderful day!

Because this barn was near an intersection of two roads, I was able to get three views of it.
This is the east side.

Here is the view from the south.

And then the west side. I am afraid that the next strong wind will being it down.

Tuesday was a beautiful day to go bird-watching at Shiloh National Military Park. A pair of Bald Eagles nest there each year.

One of the adult eagles was posing for photos. If it could write, it would be giving autographs!

Good Fences and Thankful Thursday, May 18, 2017

McNairy County, Tennessee, USA, May 1, 2017
I am always looking for birds perched on fences or for an animal behind the fence, but this is the most unusual thing I have ever seen on a fence!

I had to go back and look a second time. I wonder what happened to the rest of the truck.

And for Thankful Thursday, I am thankful that my old car (2000 Chevy Impala) is still running!

I hope you are having a great day!

Starlings, May 17, 2017

ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday
S is for Starlings: Birds native to Europe, Asia and Australia, but now found in many other parts of the world, too.
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 5, 2017
European Starlings, Sturnus vulgaris, can be found in most parts of the United States and Canada. They are all descended from 100 birds set free in New York City in the early 1890s.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 7, 2017
Starlings need open grassy areas for catching insects to eat, an easily accessible water source, and trees or buildings with niches for nesting. Their numbers have increased so much that they are considered to be threats to native birds in competition for nesting sites.

Have a wonderful day!
