Sleeping With One Eye Open! October 17, 2020

Saturday's Critters and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Click on the photo to see it at its best.

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, October 2, 2020
I saw these Mallard Ducks in a quiet spot at Pickwick Lake. I thought they were asleep, but when I enlarged the photo I could see an open eye. I checked several birding sites and discovered that Ducks can sleep with one eye open to watch for predators!

Have a wonderful weekend!

  3. Thank goodness we don't have to sleep in such an alert state. Some nights I have a hard time sleeping peacefully!

  10. Even my pet parakeet (had them as pets when I was younger) could sleep that way. Would open one eye if I came by, saw it was me, close it, stay asleep.

  11. How they can be comfortable with their heads tucked back like that is a mystery.
