Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, December 2018

In the northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7

freeze-damaged rose bud
I almost had a rose blooming in December, but then our nighttime temperatures dropped to 24F (-4C) earlier this week. The bud is still there, but I doubt that it will open.

Walking along my driveway to my mailbox Thursday afternoon, I found a Dandelion blooming. Unless Dandelions are completely taking over your lawn, remember they are not weeds, they are wildflowers!

You may remember from my November Bloom Day post that I bought a 'Red Lion' Amaryllis bulb. It put up two bloom stalks! The first bloom stalk opened four blooms on December 4th. The second bloom stalk is smaller with only two buds. It will be a few more days before they open.

Just a reminder to check your bird feeders and refill if needed.

Happy Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day!
and
Merry Christmas!

  3. Love the amaryllis. I didn't get any for the holiday season this year. Aren't we lucky that we have birds to brighten our winter even when there are no - or few - flowers?

  4. Poor little rosebud - it deserves an "A" for effort. Whoever declared the dandelion a weed anyway? It provides a bright spot of color, which is worth a lot during this time of year. Happy GBBD, Lea!

  5. I also love dandelions as they're so cheerful. We don't have cardinals in this area so seeing those bright red birds is always such a treat. (I've never seen one in person.) Happy GBBD and Merry Christmas to you too, Lea!

  8. That poor rose. Something like that happened where I live in upstate New York - but a while ago. It was nice seeing your red and your cardinal; helps put me into the Christmas spirit. Happy GBBD, and Merry Christmas to you.

  10. Happy Garden Bloggers Bloom Day! Poor rose, such a shame that it froze. I'm reminded every year at this time that I really should give Amaryllis a try.

  11. Temperature dropping in negative is nowhere a scene in our region...we have mild winters and we can have flowers throughout it.
    have a great week ahead.

  12. Happy Bloom Day Lea! Your rosebud still looks good and it's funny how the dandelion is still blooming! I love your Cardinal photo. We have them here too and I so enjoy watching them at the feeder. You just reminded me. I need to get an Amaryllis!!!
