ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday
K is for Kingfishers - stocky, fish-eating birds with dagger-like bills

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, September 6, 2018
Belted Kingfishers, Megaceryle alcyon, have a range that covers most of North America. Look for them perched on tree branches that overhang ponds or streams, and you may see them dive into the water to catch a fish. They also eat insects, crustaceans, reptiles, and small mammals.

Have a wonderful day!

  5. They are fascinating! Hard to believe kingfishers and hummingbirds are related; then again, it makes sense. I remember watching a kingfisher diving and gliding over a river in the Milwaukee area. So fun to watch!
