Willy Nilly Friday, June 22, 2018

Willy Nilly Friday 5, Sky Watch Friday,
and on Saturday, Saturday's Critters and I'd Rather B Birdin'

1. Summer Solstice (Sky Watch Friday)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 21, 2018
We woke up yesterday morning to a strong thunderstorm giving us 2 ½ inches (6cm) of rain. I thought, 'That's no way to officially start Summer,' but by noon the sun was shining!

2. Good Food!
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, June 11, 2018
Chicken Crispers at Chili's Grill Restaurant: fried chicken with honey-mustard dipping sauce, corn on the cob, and French-fried potatoes. Delicious! (and I had left-over chicken to take home).

3. Farming
Lee County, Mississippi, USA, June 11, 2018
Here it comes!
I like living in farming country, but meeting the farming equipment on the road is a bit scary.

And there it goes!
I was glad I was near a church parking lot so I could pull off the road to let it pass.

4. Leopard Moth (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 8, 2018
I found this Giant Leopard Moth, Hypercompe scribonia, on the Elephant Ear plant at the end of my front porch. I think this is a female; the males are larger. The caterpillar is a black 'wooly-bear' type with narrow red bands. I am still looking to find one of them!

5. Red-headed Woodpecker (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Bruton Branch, Tennessee, USA, May 11, 2018
The numbers of Red-headed Woodpeckers, Melanerpes erythrocephalus, are in a slow but steady decline as more forests are destroyed each year. They need old forests with dead trees to drill out their nesting cavities. They eat seeds, nuts, fruits, and insects. You can attract Woodpeckers by hanging suet blocks that have seeds mixed in.

Have a wonderful weekend!

  1. ...lucky you, we need rain badly, perhaps this weekend.
    ...yum.
...I see that you live in John Deere country too.
...I never knew what the adult of the 'wooly-bear' looked like, thanks.
...a bird that I rarely see.
Thanks Lea for stopping by, enjoy your weekend.

  2. With the terrible flooding that can result, we are almost afraid of getting rainstorms nowadays. And, I've never seen a moth like that.

  4. You had some interesting stuff on here today. That farm machinery is awesome. What would we do without our farmers? And, that moth. I've never in my life seen one like it. So cool.

  9. The farm equipment is quite similar to what we see here in the country. I can't recall the last time I had corn on the cob.

  11. Hello, gorgeous sky and view! I have seen that farm equipment on our roads some times. They need a lot of room. The moth is a beauty. The Red-headed Woodpecker is one of my favorites. Great photos. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Happy Saturday, enjoy your weekend!

  13. Each of your pics are great. Love the moth (wish she was on my elephant ears). Great shot of the red-headed woodpecker too. I have only seen two since I moved to Kentucky almost three years ago.

  14. Your summer solstice sky is spectacular. Billowy clouds floating in a sky of blue...it doesn't get much better than that. It's a shame about the woodpeckers, though. "Progress" for people does NOT mean progress for other species.
