Killdeer, September 20, 2017

ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday
K is for Killdeer - an American Plover

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, May 24, 2017
Killdeers, Charadrius vociferous, can be found all across North America. Though classified as a shore bird, they may live far inland near small bodies of water. Their name comes from their call, a shrill kill-deer, kill-deer.

Have a wonderful day!

  3. Oh, they are so tenacious and fascinating. My parents usually have a nesting pair in the gravel along their front walkway every year. The mama and papa do such a good job of distracting passersby away from the nest and the eggs. One of the most interesting ground-nesting birds. :)

  4. When my mother was dying I would go outside the nursing home and there was a creek with Killdeer nearby. I would watch them. It was a peaceful break in the day.

  5. I don't get to see enough of the Killdeer. One year there was a nest in the front yard of a home nearby, they had to mow around it!
