Indian Mound, Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, May 31, 2020 |
There are wooden steps going up to the top of the largest mound.
The information signs are showing the effects of the tremendous amount of rain we have had in the last couple of years. The illustration depicts a community gathering around an athletic field for a game of stick-ball. Archeologists date the site as being about 800 years old, but they are not sure if these Native Americans were related to the present day tribes of Choctaw and Chickasaw that still live in the area.
From the top of the mound there is a beautiful view of the Tennessee River.
It was wonderful to be outdoors and feel "normal" for a few hours!
Have a blessed day!

Hello, What a nice walk and the view of the river is fabulous. Have a great day and happy weekend ahead.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful place to visit for the day. And you're right, it feels so good to do something normal for a change. And the restrooms were open...how nice is THAT!!! Have a good day!
ReplyDeleteOne can understand why people have been in that area for 800 years.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful setting. Did it say whether these were burial or ceremonial mounds? So glad to hear at least one park has rest rooms open. Thanks for taking us along on your visit.
ReplyDeleteThis mound is not a burial mound. Archeologists say they think buildings used for governmental and religious purpose were on top of several of the mounds. But they did find human remains in one of the mounds, probably the community leaders or other important people in the village.
DeleteWhat a gorgeous spot, Lea!
ReplyDeletesuch a peaceful place to visit
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a nice place to explore. I'm unsure if I've been to Indian mounds in the past. The ball court ritual reminds me of Mayan ball courts.
ReplyDeleteAgree with you that river view is beautiful...great shot.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful day
