Rock Pigeons (Rock Doves), Columba livia, originated in Asia and Africa, but have spread to many other parts of the world. There are a variety of color combinations including white and rusty-red. This one is darker than most of the ones we see here.

I hope you are having a beautiful week!

American Goldfinches, June 26, 2021

Saturday's Critters and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Click on the photos to see them at their best.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 26, 2021
American Goldfinches, Spinus tristis, breed later than most North American birds, waiting until there are plenty of plant seeds available in the Summer months. Unlike many other birds, they do not eat insects. You can attract them to your yard by offering seeds on the ground or in a hanging feeder.

They are common birds across much of North America. Those in the north migrate south for the winter, but those of us with mild winters get to enjoy them all year!

Two male Goldfinches and one female
The males are brilliant yellow, but the females have more muted colors to give them camouflage on their nests. The females seem to be more camera-shy and seem to prefer feeding on the ground.

Have a wonderful day!

Thankful Thursday, June 24, 2021

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

I am thankful today for new potatoes!

Do you sometimes reach into your potato bin and find that the last few potatoes have sprouted?
Do you know that you can plant them and grow new potatoes?

In early March I put four sprouted red potatoes in a few inches of potting soil in a huge plastic flower pot set in full sun, and covered them with a few more inches of potting soil. At the plants grew, I added more potting soil until the pot was full. (Similar to 'hilling up' if planted in the ground). We had plenty of rain, so no additional care was needed.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 16, 2021
When the tops died down three months later, I dug them up.

After I brushed off the dirt and adjusted the scale for the weight of the plate, two pounds and five ounces of new red potatoes!

The first time I grew potatoes, I used a grow bag and seed potatoes, but the basic process is the same with kitchen-sprouted red potatoes and a big flower pot.
If you are interested, here is my post from last year: A Garden Experiment

Have a blessed day!

High atop the electric power structure at Pickwick Dam on the Tennessee River...

... an Osprey nest with an adult and a juvenile! Ospreys, Pandion haliaetus, are large Hawks that dive feet-first into the water to catch fish near the surface. Occasionally, you may see one flying home with a fish clutched in its talons.

I hope you have a beautiful day!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, June 2021

The 15th of each month is Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day hosted by Carol at May Dreams Gardens

What's blooming in June in my garden in the northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

Click on the photos to see them at their best.

My flowers like to play tricks on me by blooming in between Bloom Days - Butterfly Weed on June 3rd.

My Spiderworts have been standing up proud with masses of blooms until heavy rains last week knocked them down. But they are still blooming laying down in the grass.

Day Lilies are everywhere!

Last week I bought these lovely Dianthus plants - three pots of them! I am not sure where I am going to plant them.

Another recent purchase - Strawberry plants. I've never seen red blooming ones; my others have white blooms. No ripe berries yet, so I don't know how the taste compares to my other strawberries.

My 'Burpless Beauty' Cucumbers are blooming, and there are a few tiny cucumbers.

Bees love the blooms on the Linden Tree (aka Basswood)

My mind is really slipping - I almost forgot my Gardenia!

For foliage as pretty as a flower - Nandina! And it produces tiny white blooms in the Spring.

Now for a look at things to come

The Mulleins (wildflowers), Verbascum thapsus, are putting up bloom stalks!

Happy Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day!

Lee County, Mississippi, USA, June 10, 2021
The Brown Thrasher, Toxostoma rufum, is a ground forager who eats insects, seeds, nuts, and berries. Brown Thrashers can imitate a wide variety of other birds' songs, but are not as well known as Mockingbirds because they spend much of their time hidden in dense underbrush (unlike Mockingbirds who sing from the tree tops). Their range includes the eastern and central parts of the United States and southern Canada.

Have a blessed day!

I made this photo of a female Red-bellied Woodpecker, Melanerpes carolinus, through my dining room window. Red-bellied Woodpeckers can be found in much of the eastern half of the United States. You may attract them to your yard by hanging suet feeders.

I hope you have a beautiful day!

I don't know what this Common Grackle, Quiscalus quiscula, has found in the pile of rocks, but it certainly has its eye on something! They eat seeds, insects, small fish and amphibians, and mice.

I hope you have a beautiful day!
