Willy Nilly Friday 5, Sky Watch Friday, The Weekend in Black and White,
and on Saturday, Saturday's Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Click on the photos to see them at their best.

1. Sunny Skies! (Sky Watch Friday)
Shiloh National Military Park, Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, April 18, 2020
Though Saturday was a beautiful sunny day, there were very few people taking the self-guided driving tour of the park. All the buildings in the park are closed, and the parking lot is closed off so that people cannot gather there. We had our masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer with us, and followed the social distancing guidelines when we stopped briefly at the Eagle's nesting area.

And far overhead, our National Bird, the Bald Eagle, soars! (almost a Haiku verse)

2. My Vegetable Garden
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 22, 2020
Our weather has been warm, then cold, then warm again so often that it's hard to know when to set out the tomatoes! I bought these three (two Better Boys and a Sweet 100) and kept them in the house during the coldest nights, but decided Wednesday it was time to plant them. (There were four, but one died).

I planted them deep, covering up at least half the plant. Since I am not able to dig in the ground, I am growing them in large flower pots. I chose red pots in case there is any truth to the old wives' tale that the red color will encourage them to make more tomatoes!

3. Clematis (The Weekend in Black and White)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 20, 2020
double white Clematis

4. Favorite Photo of the Week (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 20, 2020
I never thought of Geese as aristocrats, but doesn't this one have a very superior look on its face?
Canada Goose, Branta canadensis.

5. European Starling (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 20, 2020
Yes, I know, Starlings are an invasive species that are problematic in some areas, but I always think of the book "Arnie, the Darling Starling" by Margarete Sigl Corbo whenever I see a Starling!
European Starling, Sturnus vulgaris.

Hope you are having a good week!

  1. The thought of one of the bloodiest battlefields of the Civil War lying almost empty except for a soaring bald eagle is quite the imagery for our uncertain times. The red theory for tomatoes is interesting - I have seen red plastic mulch sold for the same reason but our community garden does not permit plastic mulches. I've never tried red pots. Our weather is still way too unsettled - our several local nurseries have just opened or will be opening this week.

  2. I don't even know if our garden centers will open so I may have to grow tomatoes from slices of tomato - a friend does that each year and has great results. The Canada Goose seems to think he has a neck like a Heron. ;-)

  3. A great collection of photos. Love the thrill of seeing a bald eagle. Mmm, tomatoes grown at home. I need some new big flower pots.

  5. ...I never thought of Geese as aristocrats either. I like them, but we have an overabundance of them.

  8. Great looking tomato starts. I planted some seeds before I left in January. I wonder if any came up? Maybe I'll find out when I get back home after self-isolation in the city. - Margy

  11. Love your eagle shot! I cannot seem to get a good in flight pic. We have an eagle's nest down the road from here. There are 2 eaglets. One was perched on the nest yesterday, so I don't think it will be long before he takes off. We drive the back roads to get out. Rarely ever see anyone. Have a wonderful weekend!

  12. The eagle is such a neat sighting and what a nice place to go and see it. The few places that you can get to here are empty too. I'll be so glad when they open trailheads and parking areas up though. I check on them every day! lol Love the Goose....what a dignified pose! Have a good weekend!
