White Pelican, July 10, 2019

Wild Bird Wednesday and My Corner of the World

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, July 9, 2019
The American White Pelican, Pelecanus erythrorhynchos, is one of the largest of North American birds. They are strong fliers, migrating north to their breeding grounds, and returning south in the colder months of the year. They use their huge bills to scoop up fish to eat, and sometimes work in groups to 'herd' fish to shallow water where they are easier to catch. When swimming they may appear to be totally white. The black wing tips are much more visible when they are standing or flying.

Have a wonderful day!

  4. That's a great shot of a beautiful pelican and I love the information.

The last five years or so we have lots of white pelicans on the Arkansas River in Tulsa. It is a beautiful sight when they are all together on the water.
