Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day July 2018

The northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7
The Summer has been hot (mid 90sF, 35C), but we have been blessed with adequate rain.

Butterfly Bush, Buddleia

Crepe Myrtle

Althea, Rose of Sharon

I always add Marigolds as companion plants for my Tomatoes

Turk's Cap, Malvaviscus, is just beginning to bloom.

I thought all my Day Lilies had bloomed, but one more appeared just in time for Bloom Day!

My Gladiolus are making tall bloom stems that tend to fall over as the buds open.

This one found support on one of my tomato cages.

I bought a box of 100 bulbs this year and have been very pleased with the color assortment.

I bought these Begonias as small plants two months ago. The one on the right was labeled Dragon Wing Pink; the other did not have a label. I thought they were both the same. I am surprised and pleased to have two colors - pink and red!

The Butterfly Milkweed that I rescued from the side of the road just ahead of the highway mowing machines three years ago (in June of 2015) is the only milkweed I have. Others I have bought from garden centers have lived for only one year, so I am looking for more to rescue!

Phlox always seem to say 'Summer!' to me. This one has been in my garden for a long time.

My most recent purchase: A Flame Red Phlox that I found on the bargain table at a garden center in Tupelo yesterday. The regular price was $8.98, and it was marked down to $3.00!

Happy Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day!

  2. Our summer has been similar--almost tropical here with highs in the 90s and plentiful rain. Now the forecast is a little milder in the week ahead--with highs in the 80s and cooler nights. Summer is so awesome. Happy GBBD!

  5. Beautiful summer flowers. We have several of those in common, but I never have any luck with buddleia. Yours with its butterfly accompaniment is just lovely.

  8. Lovely blooms, and I enjoy the southern blogs for their camillas and their crepe myrtles. I'm not even going to attempt a crepe myrtle, although they do grow some in the NYC area, some 150 miles from me. Anyway, phlox always say "summer" to me, too. Mine isn't blooming yet so thank you for sharing yours.

  9. I love finding surprises on the clearance table. Usually they are something I never considered buying but then I end up being pleasantly surprised later.

  10. A lovely array of blooms, Lea! Good to see the swallowtail on your butterfly bush; we seem to have a lot more butterflies this year, which makes me happy. Good find on the phlox--that is a gorgeous color!

  11. I haven't had much luck with milkweed either. The only one I have is a tropical that came back from the roots. All the other didn't make it at all. Thanks for sharing.
