Sandpipers? January 14, 2017

Saturday's Critters, Camera Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Lee county, Mississippi, USA, January 10, 2017

If you noticed the question mark in my post's title, you probably realize that I do not know the name of this bird. It is a small fast-moving bird, constantly walking and probing the shallow water with its long bill.

I think it must be a migratory bird just passing through north Mississippi. I live about 300 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico, so I am not familiar with shorebirds.

Its companion was working the other side of this slow-moving stream. I am thinking it must be some kind of Sandpiper, maybe?

I am hoping someone can identify this bird for me.

UPDATE: Thank you birding friends - they are Wilson's Snipes!
Wilson's Snipes are migratory birds, breeding in Canada and the northern parts of the US. They are seen here in the southeastern states only in the Winter.

Have a wonderful week-end!

  5. Very accurate photos Lea. I can tell from here that it is Wilson's Snipe, and slightly different looking from our UK Common Snipe.

  16. Isn't that cool the way bird bloggers help out -- I've asked for help like that quite a few times. Sure wouldn't have known this bird -- so I learned something new today too.
