Saturday's Critters and Camera Critters
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, February 25, 2016

While the birds were temporarily away from the feeder, this squirrel was grabbing handfuls of sunflower seeds and quickly stuffing them in its mouth.

No wonder that they are so fat!

We have a half-dozen squirrels who have taken up permanent residence in our trees. We put this feeder on the ground for the Doves and other ground-feeding birds.

SWF: Red Barn, February 26, 2016

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, February 22, 2016

I turned the car around and went back to get a photo of this long red barn under a rainy sky.
We've had a slow drizzly rain for most of this week. Not pleasant to be out in, but it is good for the onions I planted last Saturday!

Hope your weather is good!

Daffodil, February 22, 2016

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, February 19, 2016

My Daffodils are a bit late this year. I have had blooms as early as January 29 (2013)
and January 31 (2012). Last year (2015) the first bloom was on February 9.
It is still Winter here, but Spring is coming!

If you are wondering about Daffodil blooms in 2014, I was diagnosed with Leukemia in February, and lost half a year to hospital stays, chemo treatments, and recovery in a rehabilitation facility. I am very thankful to be able to report that my most recent blood
counts are very near normal for the first time in two years.

Praise the Lord! His mercies are new every morning!

Saturday's Critters, Camera Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'
Wild Turkeys, Meleagris gallopavo, Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, February 19, 2016

I was driving home yesterday afternoon when I saw a flock of about 25 wild turkeys grazing in a field. Most of my photos are slightly blurry because the turkeys were in constant motion, searching for food. Something startled them, and they paused to look around, giving me a chance to get a clear photo of this group of nine (or are there ten?).

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, February 2016

Northeast Mississippi, USA zone 7

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, February 14, 2016

Hellebores, aka Lenten Roses, are dependable bloomers unless they are covered with snow. No snow yet this Winter, but nighttime temperatures are below freezing, and the daytime temperatures are not far above.

If it were not for the Hellebores, I would be completely bereft of blooms, as hungry deer ventured into our yard and ate my pansies!

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 29, 2016

I didn't actually see them eating my pansies, but they are definitely the ones eating the sunflower seeds we put out for the birds!

Though this is not the usual barn shape, I think it meets the definition of a barn: a large building, as on a farm, for storing hay, grain, etc., and often for housing livestock.

E is for Eastern Bluebird
Eastern Bluebird, Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 29, 2016

Eastern Bluebirds, Sialia sialis, can be found in the eastern half of North America from southeastern Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. They eat a variety of insects, worms, spiders, snails, wild fruits and berries. Their migratory patterns may vary from year to year depending on the availability of Winter food.

Eastern Bluebirds were on the decline, but now their numbers are increasing thanks to wooden nest boxes put up by birding enthusiasts.

Dove, February 3, 2016

ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday
D is for Doves - stocky, short-legged birds with short necks and small heads.
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, January 15, 2016

Mourning Doves, Zenaida macroura, are common all across the United States. Their name comes from their call, a low mournful coo, coo, coo. In some states Mourning Doves are protected as song birds. In other states (Mississippi included) they are considered to be game birds, and there are regulated hunting seasons.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, December 19, 2015

In the Winter, Mourning Doves come to our feeders for black-oil sunflower seeds that we scatter on the ground, but they are very wary. The slightest sound startles them into flight. I made this photo through my dining room window. Obviously, I need to wash my windows if I want to get better pictures!
