Buttonbush, July 22, 2015

Wildflower Wednesday, ABC Wednesday, Signs, and Wednesday Waters

Wildflower Wednesday
Buttonbush, Lee county, Mississippi, USA, July 8, 2015

Buttonbush, Cephalanthus occidentalis, is a tall shrub with dark green leaves that come to a point at the tip.  It likes moist soil so it is most often found in marshes or near streams, ponds, and lakes.

In the Summer, it produces Ping-Pong sized balls of tiny flowers.   Bees and butterflies sip the nectar and pollinate the flowers.  The seeds are eaten by ducks, geese and shorebirds.

I did not see any bees or butterflies on the Buttonbush, but this dragonfly was darting around. I watched and waited until it lit nearby.  I hope it was catching mosquitos!

ABC Wednesday
B is for Bottle Art:  Bottles converted into works of art.
Jackson, Tennessee, USA, July 9, 2015

We went to the Summer Celebration at West Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center in Jackson, Tennessee. The theme was Bees, Birds, Butterflies, and Bottles.

If this is too massive for your garden, how about something lighter...

...like these small bottles filled with colored water.

Or perhaps, a bottle tree is more your style.

The mess didn't seem to bother this Dragonfly!

Wednesday Waters
Pickwick Lake, Mississippi, USA, July 6, 2015

If you ever wanted to own a paddle-wheel riverboat, here's your chance. The Pickwick Belle is for sale by Captain's Choice Boat and Yacht Sales in Iuka, Mississippi.  (If you are wondering how to pronounce Iuka, it is  eye-you-ka, and it was the name of an American Indian chief).

Have a Beautiful Day!

  2. It is amazing how the bottle trees that are so popular seems to have launched the more artful displays of bottles. I love button bushes. The fuzzy looking blooms are so cheerful. Happy WW.

  13. I like the buttonbush - a new plant to me.
That poor old Pickwick Belle looks a bit forlorn.

  14. Hi Lea,
I enjoyed getting to see the different parts of your part of the country in your posts on my way to the WW one. I love that bottle wall! We coudn't have something that would end up with water in it, due to mosquitoes. I was happy to see the buttonbush in your post. I saw some in the wild a few years ago, and then found a small, root bound one to plant. It is only about 3.5 feet tall, and hasn't bloomed yet, but I'm hoping it will next year. Thanks for your comment on my WW post.
