Summer Tanager, September 30, 2020

I feel pretty sure that this is a juvenile male Summer Tanager. If any of you more experienced birders think differently, please let me know. Summer Tanagers, Piranga rubra, are migratory birds who breed in the southern United States. Their migration may take them as far south as the middle of South America. The females and juveniles are yellow; the males are red. Judging by the few red feathers among the yellow, this is a young male beginning to get his adult feathers. I was surprised to see it here at my house. It is the only one I have ever seen.

Have a wonderful day!

  5. Oh, that's wonderful. Great photo, too. We've had Scarlet Tanagers here, but I think I'm just a bit too far north for the Summer Tanager (it looks like they breed as far north as Northern Illinois). Beautiful birds!
