From my car window, I photographed this male Common Grackle, Quiscalus quiscula, taking a bath!

On cloudy days Common Grackles seem to be just another black bird, but in bright sunshine they sparkle!

Have a wonderful day!

As travel is still restricted, I had to find a different perspective to my own barn - The Wildflower View!

After getting the photo from the hilltop, I walked down the slope to get the Wildflower View from down there.

Willy Nilly Friday 5, Sky Watch Friday, The Weekend in Black and White,
and on Saturday, Saturday's Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Click on the photos to see them at their best.

1. Sunny Skies! (Sky Watch Friday)
Shiloh National Military Park, Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, April 18, 2020
Though Saturday was a beautiful sunny day, there were very few people taking the self-guided driving tour of the park. All the buildings in the park are closed, and the parking lot is closed off so that people cannot gather there. We had our masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer with us, and followed the social distancing guidelines when we stopped briefly at the Eagle's nesting area.

And far overhead, our National Bird, the Bald Eagle, soars! (almost a Haiku verse)

2. My Vegetable Garden
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 22, 2020
Our weather has been warm, then cold, then warm again so often that it's hard to know when to set out the tomatoes! I bought these three (two Better Boys and a Sweet 100) and kept them in the house during the coldest nights, but decided Wednesday it was time to plant them. (There were four, but one died).

I planted them deep, covering up at least half the plant. Since I am not able to dig in the ground, I am growing them in large flower pots. I chose red pots in case there is any truth to the old wives' tale that the red color will encourage them to make more tomatoes!

3. Clematis (The Weekend in Black and White)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 20, 2020
double white Clematis

4. Favorite Photo of the Week (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 20, 2020
I never thought of Geese as aristocrats, but doesn't this one have a very superior look on its face?
Canada Goose, Branta canadensis.

5. European Starling (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 20, 2020
Yes, I know, Starlings are an invasive species that are problematic in some areas, but I always think of the book "Arnie, the Darling Starling" by Margarete Sigl Corbo whenever I see a Starling!
European Starling, Sturnus vulgaris.

Hope you are having a good week!

Wildflower Wednesday and All Seasons
The 4th Wednesday of each month is Wildflower Wednesday

Click on the photos to see them at their best.
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 20, 2020
Lyreleaf Sage, Salvia lyrata, is a wildflower that can be found in the eastern half of the United States and as far west as Texas and Kansas. The blue tubular blooms are on spikes above the leaves.

The green leaves grow next to the ground and have purplish edges.

You may see them mixed with other wildflowers. I think these white flowers may be Fleabane.

Wild Bird Wednesday and My Corner of the World
Yes, I know it is still Tuesday here in the US, but it's already Wednesday in Australia and New Zealand!

Shiloh National Military Park, Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, April 18, 2020
We checked the Shiloh Park website before we went: All buildings are closed, but the self-guided driving tour is open. We took masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer with us, and followed the social distancing guidelines. We were thrilled to see one of the adult Bald Eagles perched near the nest!
Bald Eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus. As you probably know, the name means white head, not bald head.

1. The View from our Mailbox (Sky Watch Friday)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 16, 2020
The road is calling, but we have to stay home. Sad, but thankful for the sunny skies!

2. Oxalis (Floral Friday Fotos)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 6, 2020
Oxalis can be found in many parts of the world and are known by several different names: Wood Sorrels and False Shamrocks are the most common names.

I think the specks on the petals is where rain has splashed dirt on them.

3. My Vegetable Garden
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 17, 2020
My 'Red Norland' potatoes are growing very well. Let's just hope they are making potatoes, too!

I have bought 4 Tomato plants, but they are still in their small pots. I hope to get them set out this weekend. I plan to plant Cucumber seeds, too, but I am undecided about Okra. It did not grow well for me last year, so I may rely on the Farmer's Markets for Okra this year.

4. Crane Fly (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 9, 2020
The Cranefly is a small fragile insect, larger than a mosquito, but it is not a mosquito, and it does not bite.

5. Crow in Flight (I'd Rather B Birdin' and The Weekend in Black and White)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 12, 2020
I intended to get a photo of this crow perched on a dead tree, but just as I clicked the shutter he took off! American Crow, Corvus brachyrhynchos.

Hope you have had a good week!

Thankful Thursday, April 16, 2020

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

One of our cats passed away this morning. We are sad, but thankful for the 12 years he shared our lives.

He just showed up one day down at the barn. And then he began to come closer to the house, and before we knew what was happening, he moved into our house and into our hearts!

And though he had water bowls inside the house and out on the porch, he preferred rain water.

He enjoyed climbing up high so he could keep an eye on everything.

Playing Tag with the dog was a favorite sport!

But just rolling around on the ground was good exercise, too.

Rest in peace, Big Jay. We are so thankful that we were your people!

Have a blessed day!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, April 2020

Our World Tuesday and Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day
Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day is the 15th of each month.

The northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

My Encore Azalea 'Autumn Royalty' blooms in the Spring, and then there is a repeat performance in the Autumn. This Spring it is totally covered with blooms!

Pink Dogwoods are small trees that bloom in the Spring, and produce berries for the birds in the Autumn.

Most of our Narcissus have finished blooming, but I have a clump of late-blooming ones.

Butterweed, Packera glabella, is a wildflower that can spread quickly and become a nuisance, but isn't it a wonderful cheerful color?

Kerria japonica 'Multiflora' is past its peak bloom time, but still pretty.

A shrub native to the southeastern United States, Red Buckeye, Aesculus pavia, has tubular red blooms that attract Hummingbirds. And it has been grown successfully outside of its native range.

A wildflower I rescued from the side of the road: Spiderwort.

My red climbing rose is blooming!

I have two Clematis vines. This purple one that is just beginning to open its buds and...

… a double white Clematis that is in full bloom.

Happy Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day!

5. A Resident and a Migrant (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 2, 2020
Mourning Doves, Zenaida macroura, are common year-round residents here in Mississippi. The White-throated Sparrow, Zonotrichia albicollis, is just passing through. Their breeding grounds stretch from the Great Lakes region of the northern United Sates on northward all across Canada. We scatter sunflower seeds on the ground for our ground-feeding feathered friends.
