The Barn Collective and All Seasons

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, March 26, 2020
Okay, so we stay at home - this is my barn on one of our rare sunny days. (We had rain again last night).

With wildflowers in front!

Claytonia virginica, whose common name is Spring Beauty!

1. Rain (Sky Watch Friday)
Lee County, Mississippi, USA, March 24, 2020
All the streams and creeks are near to overflowing; we had 5 inches (12cm) of rain this week!

2. Good Food!
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, March 15, 2020
At Olive Garden: Zoodles! Spiralized Zucchini, with other vegetables and grilled chicken in a creamy sauce. It was very good! And I am glad we went there before the 'shut down the restaurants' order came. They have relaxed the rules a little bit now to allow carry-out (to-go) food.

3. Kerria (Floral Friday Fotos)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, March 21, 2020
Kerria japonica is a sprawling shrub that I will cut back as soon as the blooms fade.
(I trim them back enough that they don't block my garden path).

4. My dog, Miss B (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, March 25, 2020
I know one girl who is happy about the 'stay at home' order - my dog!
And did you know that having a pet to love and care for helps relieve stress?

5. Grackle (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, March 15, 2020
Common Grackles, Quiscalus quiscula, live in the eastern half of the continent. The northernmost birds come south to spend the Winter and return to Canada in the Spring.

Hope you are safe and healthy!

Wild Bird Wednesday and My Corner of the World

Click on the photo to see it at its best.

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, March 12, 2020
A female Belted Kingfisher, Megaceryle alcyon. Males have the blue/grey band, but not the brown one.

Belted Kingfishers range all across the North American continent, migrating southward in the Winter, and returning north to their breeding grounds in the Spring. But in the mid-section (the USA) they are year-round residents. As their name implies, their main food source is fish, so look for them perched near water.

Have a wonderful day!

Wild Bird Wednesday and My Corner of the World

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, February 22, 2020
Black Vultures, Coragyps atratus, feed on carrion which they locate by sight while floating around in the sky almost effortlessly with only occasional wing flaps. I saw these birds feeding beside the road on a deer that had been hit and killed by a car

Have a blessed day!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, March 2020

The northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

Click on the photos to see them at their best.

Our Pear Trees are blooming!

I have two different Spirea shrubs blooming...

… but, I do not know the name of either one.

Most of the Daffodils are fading, but a few are still going strong.

.

I do not know what this little beauty is. I would be most grateful for any help identifying it.

Snowflakes, Luecojum.

My red Hyacinth bloomed earlier; now it is the pink one's turn to shine!

The Spring Beauty, Claytonia virginica, is a tiny wildflower, but over time it will multiply to cover an entire lawn. When the grass begins to grow in the Spring, the blooms will fade away, and lawn mowing can begin. They will be back next Spring!

When the buds open, the Hummingbirds will come flocking in! (Well, maybe not a whole flock, but...)
The promise of things to come - Red Buckeyes, Aesculus pavia, are Hummingbird magnets! Did you know there is a Hummingbird Migration Map that shows where the birds have been spotted? Here is the website. Click Here for the Spring 2020 map, and hang up your feeders to welcome them to your garden!

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, March 5, 2020
At Applebee's: Chicken Wonton Stir Fry. Grilled chicken and vegetables on a bed of rice with a sweet-spicy sauce and topped with crispy wonton strips. It was very good, and a generous serving. The left-overs were delicious re-heated the next day!

4. Deer (Saturday's Critters)

Wild Bird Wednesday and My Corner of the World

Click on the photo to see it at its best.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, February 22, 2020
Cedar Waxwings, Bombycilla cedrorum, are migratory birds that breed in Canada and the northern half of the United States. We see them here in the southern US only in the Winter. Their name comes from their fondness for cedar berries. To attract them to your yard, plant native fruit-bearing trees such as dogwood, serviceberry, juniper, cedar, hawthorn, and winterberry. During the Summer breeding season they supplement their fruit diet with flying insects. All About Birds: Cedar Waxwings website
