Willy Nilly Friday 5, Sky Watch Friday, Signs Signs, and Weekend Reflections

1. Blue Sky (Sky Watch Friday)
Tennessee River, Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, November 5, 2019
We had blue skies with a few wispy clouds for our trip to Pickwick on Tuesday. After lunch we drove across the dam to look for birds.

We saw a several Great Blue Herons, Ardea herodias, standing on the river bank, and a few Gulls flying.


And the 'William Neckel' was pushing its barges into the lock going upriver. It is owned by Tennessee Valley Towing.

2. It's Alive! (Signs Signs)
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, November 5, 2019
Precisely trimmed shrubs spell out the town's name - PICKWICK. Tuesday was a beautiful sunny day, but on Thursday came rain and colder weather.

3. Geese (Weekend Reflections)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, November 7, 2019
Canada Geese, Branta canadensis, in the shallow water of a small pond. Our trees are beginning to get their Autumn colors. The red is probably the reflection of a Maple tree.

4. Cows (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, November 7, 2019
With colder weather moving in this week, cows (and horses) are more dependent on hay for food.

5. Common Loon (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, October 31, 2019
Common Loons, Gavia immer, are migratory birds that stop here for a few days on their way south in the Autumn. I have never seen them in the Spring going back north. Maybe they are in too much of a hurry to get back to their breeding grounds!

I saw this Loon a few days later at the same small lake. I think it is the same bird, but no way to be sure.

    Perhaps the loons use a different migratory path on their northbound journey.

    Canada Geese are not my favorite birds, but I enjoyed your picture with a hint of red in the water. First snow on the ground for us today.

      There are a lot of Great Blue Herons at Pickwick Lake, more in the winter months than the summer. As for the others, I may be photographing the same ones again and again! Herons are large birds, easy to see, and they stand very still, easier to photograph than birds that flit around a lot. Herons are my favorite birds in Autumn and Winter. Hummingbirds are my favorites in Spring and Summer!

    There are loons here sometimes but I’ve never been lucky enough to see any. Love that haunting sound they make.
