3. Cactus Bloom (Floral Friday Fotos)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 25, 2019
The Night Blooming Cactus, Epiphyllum, is a sprawling plant, but it makes up for its untidy habits by producing large blooms that open at night. My husband lit it up with a flashlight last night so I could get a good photo. The blooms are pollinated by night-flying insects, and they close up at dawn.

4. Long-legged Fly (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 9, 2019
Yes, I know that flies are pests, but when you see them up close, some of them are beautiful! And actually, the Long-legged Fly is beneficial to the garden because it eats smaller insects such as aphids, gnats, beetle larva, and smaller flies.

5. Eastern Kingbird (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Stantonville, Tennessee, USA, July 24, 2019
Eastern Kingbirds, Tyrannus tyrannus, are migratory birds we see here in North America in the Spring and Summer. They spend the Winter in South America.

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 23, 2019
I am thankful for purple-hull peas! I bought a big sack of purple-hull peas at the Tupelo Farmers' Market on Tuesday. It took us several hours to shell them, but it was time well spent. I cooked them, divided them into meal-sized portions, and put them in the freezer. We will have fresh-tasting peas to eat this Winter!

Have a blessed day!

Common Loon, July 24, 2019

ABC Wednesday, Wild Bird Wednesday, and My Corner of the World
C is for the Common Loon - a North American water bird

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, July 9, 2019
Common Loon, Gavia immer, in its non-breeding (or juvenile) plumage. Common Loons spend most of their life in the water, coming ashore only to nest. They are expert swimmers and divers, catching fish and swallowing them while still underwater. Migratory birds, they breed in Canada and the most northern parts of the United States. In the Winter they gather along the North American coasts from Canada to Mexico. And the Common Loon has been seen in Greenland, Iceland, and the extreme northern part of Europe.

Wildflowers: Coreopsis, July 23, 2019

Our World Tuesday and Wildflower Wednesday
Wildflower Wednesday is the 4th Wednesday of each month.

Poinsett County, Arkansas, USA, June 30, 2019
You may know Plains Coreopsis, Coreopsis tinctoria, by one of its other names: Calliopsis, Golden Tickseed, or Garden Tickseed. It is a native North American wildflower that grows well in full sun.

When we went to our family reunion in Arkansas in June, long stretches of highway were bordered with masses of Plains Coreopsis. Absolutely beautiful! A big Thank You to the Arkansas Highway Department!

Monday Mural and Through My Lens

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, July 6, 2019
This 12 X 35 feet mural, painted by MJ Torrecampo and Lujan Perez, honors our native American Indian heritage. Piominko and Tishominko (Tishomingo) were leaders of the Chickasaw Nation when United States citizens moved into the area in the late 1700s. Mississippi became a state in 1817. The Magnolia blooms represent Mississippi's state flower, and Tupelo is the crossroads for two major railroads, BNSF and GM&O. (The tree on the sidewalk is a Crepe Myrtle).

Tupelo was incorporated in 1870, and the arrow is a copy of the "First TVA City" sign. (Tupelo was the first city to receive electric power from the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1934).

Have a wonderful week!

Thankful Thursday, Little Things Thursday, and Harvest Monday

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 17, 2019
I am thankful that my cucumber vines are producing a good crop! I planted ten 'Burpless Beauty' seeds, and every seed sprouted and grew.  I am thankful to have had enough cucumbers to share with friends.

And I made pickles! I found a recipe for refrigerator pickles on the Taste of Home website. They look a little yellow because I used apple cider vinegar instead of white vinegar, but they have a very good taste!

Here is the Taste of Home recipe: Click Here!

B is for the Blue Dasher Dragonfly

Click on photos to see them at their best.

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, July 6, 2019
The Blue Dasher, Pachydiplax longipennis, is a dragonfly of the Skimmer family that is common in many parts of North America. I saw this one perched on a car antenna in a grocery store parking lot.

They are beneficial insects, eating hundreds of smaller insects, including mosquitos, every day. Though his wings were tattered, he was still able to fly about quite well to catch his food in mid-air.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, July 2019

The northeast corner of Mississippi, USA zone 7b

I made most of these photos on Friday or Saturday, before the rain began on Saturday night. Our weather forecast is for rain to continue until mid-day on Thursday.

My Gladiolas are just about finished blooming; I think this is the last one.

Marigolds with a Gulf Fritillary Butterfly

I believe this is Hibiscus moscheutos, a native wildflower

Althea, Rose of Sharon, Hibiscus syriacus, is a large shrub (or maybe a small tree).

A double Day Lily near our driveway

Butterfly Bush, Buddleia, with its powerful aroma draws the bees and butterflies.

On Saturday I bought 3 more Geraniums for my front porch planters. I did not realize they were different colors until I got them home. The one on the left is 'Americana Cherry Rose' and the other two are 'Americana Bright Red.'

And in the Vegetable Garden:

Tomatoes,

Okra,

and Cucumbers.

1. Pickwick Lake (Sky Watch Friday)
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, July 9, 2019
We had a good view of the lake from our table when we met friends at the Pickwick Inn Restaurant for lunch on Tuesday. With partly cloudy skies, the temperature was 95F (35C) at noon. I was glad to be eating inside rather than out on the balcony!

2. Mallard Duck (Weekend Reflections)

Swallowtail Butterfly on Joe Pye Weed. When I bought the Joe Pye Weed at a garden center, my husband asked what it was. When I told him Joe Pye Weed, he said, "You're buying a weed!"

4. Snails (Saturday's Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 5, 2019
I am using bamboo canes to support some of my tomato plants. I left one laying flat on the ground overnight, and the next morning there were snails on it!

It must have been the rain that made the snails crawl out of the grass, looking for higher ground.

There were nine snails on the top side of the bamboo cane, and when I turned it over there were six more - fifteen snails on one 8-foot piece of bamboo!

5. Ruby-throated Hummingbirds (I'd Rather B Birdin')
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 9, 2019
The female Ruby-throated Hummingbirds did not seem to mind sharing their feeder with a butterfly.

But one of the males kept swooping back and forth behind the butterfly, trying to chase it away.

Then he gave up and went to the other side of the feeder to drink.

I have 8 Hummingbird feeders so there is plenty for everyone!

White Pelican, July 10, 2019

Wild Bird Wednesday and My Corner of the World

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, July 9, 2019
The American White Pelican, Pelecanus erythrorhynchos, is one of the largest of North American birds. They are strong fliers, migrating north to their breeding grounds, and returning south in the colder months of the year. They use their huge bills to scoop up fish to eat, and sometimes work in groups to 'herd' fish to shallow water where they are easier to catch. When swimming they may appear to be totally white. The black wing tips are much more visible when they are standing or flying.

Have a wonderful day!
