1. Hot and Humid (Sky Watch Friday)

Our weather this week: hot and humid with a few afternoon showers.

2. Beautyberry (Wildflower Wednesday, the 4th Wednesday of each month)

Beautyberry, Callicarpa americana, is a shrub native to the southeastern United States. The delicate pink blooms are often overlooked, but they are followed by bright, bold purple berries!

It is a good understory shrub that is easily propagated and requires little maintenance. The blooms provide nectar for butterflies, and the berries are a valuable source of food for wildlife.

3. The Most Interesting Thing I have Seen This Week

The Hummingbird Moth, Hemaris thysbe, got its name from its resemblance to a hummingbird when it is moving fast around blooming plants (a broad little body with what appears to be tail feathers, fast beating wings, sipping nectar from flowers). The flower is Buddleia, Butterfly Bush.

4. White Horse (Saturday's Critters)

When we were kids and we had the hiccups, our mother would say, "Where was the last white horse you saw?" Trying to remember the last white horse distracted our minds from the hiccups, and the hiccups would stop while we were thinking!

    Enjoy your reunion. I've seen beauty berry in the New York City area; not sure I've ever seen it here. It is lovely! Hot and humid I could do without, but grateful for the blue skies we are getting in upstate New York (finally).

    That's funny... will have to try the white horse trick next time my granddaughter gets the hiccups! Not hot and humid here (yet), but probably will be as the summer progresses.

    ...hot and humid here too, but not as hotas your weather.
    ...Beautyberry is a great plant.
    ...the Hummingbird Moth is great, I rarely see them.
    ...moms can have strange remedies.
    ...they sure grow quickly.

    Lea...thanks for sharing those Canada geese with us rhis week (at IRBB)! So many don't like them 'cause of the mess they leave behind...but, I sure do.

    I remember the first time I ever saw a hummingbird moth...I thought it WAS a bird!
