Signs and Fences, June 30, 2016

Signs, Signs
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, June 27, 2016

I guess if you drive down No Turn Around, you have to drive in reverse to get back out!
Actually, I think the people who live here are tired of other people thinking their driveway is a public road.

Good Fences
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 27, 2016
Deer think a garden is a buffet restaurant grown especially for them. A few people in our area are building deer fences - 8 strands of wire. It seems to be working; they have a beautiful garden!

Hope you are having a great week!

Killdeer, June 29, 2016

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, June 6, 2016
Killdeers, in the Plover family, are the most commonly seen shorebirds in the United States. Unlike most other shorebirds, they venture inland to live near ponds, lakes and waterways. Their main food sources are beetles, grasshoppers, and other insects. Also included in their diet: spiders, earthworms, centipedes, crayfish, snails, and seeds. Their name comes from their call: a loud piercing kill-deer, kill-dee, dee-dee-dee!

Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

With their four babies! The young ones are getting so big I can only tell them from their parents by their behavior. The parents are still careful to keep the youngsters between them, just as they did when the young ones were new-hatched yellow fuzz-balls.

Saturday's Critters, Camera Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Saturday's Critters and Camera Critters

Eastern Box Turtles, though they stay small in size, may live to be 100 years old in the wild. If captured and kept as pets, their lifespan is considerably shorter. This one is somewhere down in our woods. They eat a wide variety of food: earthworms, snails, slugs, grubs, beetles, caterpillars, berries, mushrooms, grass, and flowers.

Did you know that Hawks can turn their heads around and look directly over their backs?
I didn't until I saw this one. I think this is a Red-Shouldered Hawk, but I am not sure.

Wildflower Wednesday, June 22, 2016

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 5, 2016
Queen Anne's Lace, Daucus carota, is a native of Europe and Asia that has found its way to North America where it happily grows in fields and along roadsides. Though the buds are pink, the blooms are pure white with only an occasional red spot. According to Wikipedia, when it is grown in the garden it can boost tomato production and provide a cool microclimate for lettuces. However, the USDA has classified it as a noxious weed, and it can be a serious problem in pastures.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, June 2016

Northeast Mississippi, USA zone 7

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 1, 2016
I am beginning this Bloom Day post with the reason I do not have a lot of blooms - Deer!
Mother and son come in the early mornings nibbling their way through my yard. Thankfully, there are a few plants they leave alone.

My Gardenia is full of blooms - more than I have seen in the past few years.

The Marigolds are blooming abundantly.

I love the scalloped edges of this Coreopsis.

The Butterfly Bush is blooming, but I have not seen many butterflies on it.

And the Butterfly Weed that I rescued just before the highway department mowing machines came along last year has survived and is blooming again. Hurrah!

Happy Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day!

This Killdeer, Charadrius vociferus (in the Plover family), was not sure if I was a danger to it or not. But after staring at me for a minute, it continued searching the grass for something to eat.

Eastern Kingbird, June 8, 2016

Wild Bird Wednesday and Good Fences

Lee County, Mississippi, USA, May 20, 2016
Eastern Kingbirds, Tyrannus tyrannus, can be found across much of the United States and Canada. They lay 3 to 5 eggs in nests constructed of twigs and straw, lined with hair and rootlets.

Kingbirds belong to the Flycatcher family, and catch insects while in flight. Sometimes they sit on fences waiting for flying insects to come near them. They supplement their insect diet with berries and fruit.
