I think this is Limenitis arthemis astyanax Red-Spotted Purple Butterfly.
It was enjoying the Butterfly Bush Buddleia at my house on Thursday morning.
Most of the red spots are on the undersides of the wings. The top sides are a deep purple with shades of blue around the edges. So pretty!
Have a wonderful week-end!

ReplyDeleteReminds me of a beautiful gown.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first glanced at this, I thought, "Pipevine," but then I realized it was different. I'm not familiar with this butterfly, have never seen it here. Looking at its range map, we are probably just outside the area where it would usually occur, but I will definitely be on the lookout for it after seeing your beautiful pictures.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures!! I've been trying to get pictures of butterflies, but they are fast critters. I haven't had a lot of luck.
ReplyDeleteThey're very pretty! We get them on the mountain in W.V., but I haven't gotten any great pics of them this year (yet!).
ReplyDeleteBTW, Andy has a weekend butterfly linkup you might be interested in.
