June Bugs, June 27, 2015

June Bugs, Prentiss county, Mississippi, USA, June 25, 2015

Wikipedia describes June Bugs as New World Scarab Beetles, and adds that there are over 260 species.  They are very common here in the southeastern United States.  I don't know why they often have one leg stretched straight out.

The plant they are eating is Wisteria (it will recover magnificently - nothing kills Wisteria here).

Have a wonderful week-end!

  2. Oh, do I remember June bugs... they were great fun when I was growing up in Alabama. Haven't seen one in quite awhile though. Maybe they don't like Virginia.

  4. They're out and about here too, your captures make them look very cute actually. They aren't around as much as when I was growing up in Michigan. They would attack our car at night like it was hail coming down!

  8. June bugs! Haven't thought of them in a long time. At least they aren't invasive and destructive like the Japanese beetle.

These are amazing shots you have of these beetles ... they do look like ancient Egyptian scarabs .. that one leg straight out ? too funny, maybe it is for balance ?
