ABC Wednesday
P is for Pear Tree
Pear Tree in the Spring
Pear Tree in the Autumn
Largest one this year - 1 lb 9 oz. - about 710 kg - CORRECTION: That is 710g
Most of our pears are about one-third this size.
If you have an easy recipe using pears, I would be very happy to have it.

October Salad Days, October 26, 2013

'Grand Rapids' Lettuce, October 5, 2013
'Grand Rapids' Lettuce seeds were sown the last week in August
First harvest was October 5th, very near the '45 days to maturity' promised on the seed packet.
Now the weather is getting much colder, I'm covering the plants at night.
'Limestone Bibb' Lettuce, October 26, 2013
The first sowing of this lettuce failed to germinate, probably because the weather was still too hot.
'Limestone Bibb' Lettuces sown again on September 18. They are growing very slowly.

'Fooled You' mild Jalapeno Pepper, October 26, 2013
I've been covering the pepper plants at night hoping to coax a few more to get to eating size.
The rest of my garden (beans, tomatoes, okra) is finished. I'm already planning for next year!

First Frost, October 26, 2013
The view this morning at breakfast - first frost!
The field in the background is Soy Beans ready for harvest.

Have a beautiful day!

Looking for Autumn Color, October 25, 2013

Wayne county, Tennessee, USA, October 23, 2013
On Wednesday, we drove north to see if the trees were putting on their Autumn colors.
It was a beautiful sunny day. Most trees were still wearing their Summer green.
It looks like I'll have to be content photographing individual leaves for awhile longer.

I think this is Poison Sumac, Toxicodendron vernix
There is a non-poisonous Sumac, but I'm not going to touch it to find out which is which!

Have a Wonderful Week-end!

Yellow Ironweed, Verbesina alternifolia
Yellow Ironweed, sometimes called Crownbeard, is native to eastern North America
and blooms in the late Summer and early Autumn.

Photographed growing near Cypress Creek, Florence, Alabama, USA, September 24, 2013

Sassafras, October 21, 2013

Sassafras albidum
One of the first trees to show Autumn color here is the Sassafras.

Three leaf patterns
The Sassafras is unusual in that there are three distinct leaf patterns all on the same plant:
Un-lobed (oval), bi-lobed (mitten shaped), and tri-lobed (three pronged).

Happy Monday!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day October 2013

Mississippi, USDA Zone 7
The abundant blooms of Summer are gone, but there are still a few flowers to be found.
Lantana
Marigolds
Oxalis
Mums
Red Salvia
Pineapple Sage
Encore Azalea with Praying Mantis
Butterflyweed
The most interesting thing I have to report for this October Bloom Day is that my
Butterflyweed, after blooming all Summer and producing hundreds of seeds, is budding again!
I hope there is time for blooms before the weather gets too cold.

Happy Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day!

Cooler Weather, October 10-11, 2013

Sunset on Sunday, October 6, 2013 in Itawamba county, Mississippi, USA
There were plenty of dark clouds last Sunday, but only a drizzle of rain.
Just as sunset was near, the sun broke through the clouds.
As the rain clouds moved out, cooler temperatures moved in.
Autumn is definitely here!

Have a wonderful week-end!

Morning Glory Vines, October 8-9, 2013

ABC Wednesday and Outdoor Wednesday

ABC Wednesday
M is for Morning Glory
Blue and Purple Morning Glory, Ipomoea purpurea
Morning Glory is the common name of over 1,000 species of flowering plants.
They are usually planted to climb a trellis, but may be grown in hanging baskets or window boxes.

The base of the flower is white, letting light into the center of the bloom.
Flowers may be white, blue, pink, purple, red or multi-colored

In bright sunlight they seem to glow from within.
Morning Glory Vines may grow 10 feet (3 meters) in only 2 months after the seeds are sown.
And because of their rapid growth, they may be classified as invasive in some areas.

And for Outdoor Wednesday, we have butterflies!

The Red Spider Lilies, Lycoris radiata, are blooming.
They are sometimes called Hurricane Lilies or Resurrection Lilies

In Autumn the Sulphur Butterflies pass through our area going south for the winter

Since these two have different wing spot patterns, I wonder if they are male and female.

Hope you are having a wonderful Wednesday!

Two Years and Counting, October 3-4, 2013

The anniversary of my second year blogging passed by last week without my noticing it.
When I looked at my photos for the date, September 26,
I was happy to see it was the day we went to the Pumpkin Field Day In Jackson, Tennessee.

Ornamental Grass, September 26, 2013
It was a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky

Pumpkins grow in many different shapes, sizes, and colors
Being Pumpkin Field Day, of course, there were lots of pumpkins.

Capsicum, 'Chilly Chili'
But I was surprised to see how many marvelous ornamental peppers were growing there, too.

Capsicum 'Prairie Fire'

I forgot to get an ID for this.
And beautiful foliage plants.

Whale's Tongue Agave

Banana Trees with lovely pink ornamental grasses.
I must remember to go back in the Spring when the Iris will be blooming.
As for this week's weather, we had rain on Monday, partly cloudy skies the rest of the week,
with very pleasant temperatures.

Have a wonderful week-end!
