Wild Bird Wednesday and My Corner of the World

Turkey Vultures, Cathartes aura, are common across much of North America. Those that breed in cooler regions of the continent migrate south to spend the Winter. You are more likely to see Turkey Vultures along country roads, eating road kill (animals accidently killed by cars and trucks). They almost never catch living prey, preferring the dead which they locate using their excellent sense of smell.

ABC Wednesday and Our World Tuesday
O is for Opals - the birthstone for October. My birthday is October 20.

After I graduated from high school, got a job, and began to save a little money, I bought myself this Opal ring. Now many years later, it will only fit on my little finger. I guess I could get it stretched. If I remember correctly, the small red stones are garnets.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, October 2019

Northeast Mississippi, USA, zone 7b

Summer lingered on into September with temperatures in the high 90s F. Then we had about a week of Autumn (temperatures in the low 80s F). And now with our high temperatures in the mid 60s F, it feels like Winter will be here just any minute now!

All our resident Ruby-throated Hummingbirds started on their journey south by the end of September, but yesterday I saw a young female migrant on her way south visiting my Turk's Cap, Malvaviscus arboreus. Sorry I was not fast enough to get a photo.

I do not know the exact name of these. Last Spring a friend asked if I wanted some blue Asters, and of course, I said yes. But they are more purple-ish than blue, which is fine with me!

Hibiscus mutabilis, 'Confederate Rose.' If you count the old bloom stems, you can see I had ten blooms!

And I have one more bloom on my 'Iceberg' Rose.

Earlier in the week I posted photos of this mural, but did not know what business it was. Now the sign is up!

 A restaurant, Pizza vs. Tacos, is opening October 17th. The mural artwork is by Gulf Coast artist Michael Roy. The inside is decorated with similar murals by the same artist. (Late afternoon sun added the window reflections).

3. Farming

Farmers have been busy all Summer and into the Autumn growing and baling hay to feed their horses and cows through the Winter.

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

Thankful for the rain that came Sunday night!

And the cooler temperatures that came with the rain makes me hopeful of getting more tomatoes. When temperatures rise into the high 90s F (as it does every Summer here in Mississippi), the tomato plants are reluctant to bloom. Milder temperatures - more blooms, more tomatoes until frost comes (avg. date Oct. 28).

I am thankful for the rain and for the cooler temperatures!
