M is for
Melanerpes carolinus - Red-bellied Woodpecker
|
male Red-bellied Woodpecker, Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, February 27, 2019 |
Red-bellied Woodpeckers,
Melanerpes carolinus, are non-migratory, medium-sized woodpeckers that live in the forests of the eastern United States. You can attract them to your yard by hanging suet feeders. They also eat sunflower seeds, peanuts, and insects. Since they are tree-clinging birds, the red spot on their bellies that gives them their name is not always visible.
Have a wonderful day!

...a pretty bird to see.
ReplyDeleteHello, great capture of the woodie. They are one of many favorites. Wishing you a happy day!
ReplyDeleteNice shot! I always wonder how they got their name since it is their head that is red and not their belly. :)

I do love the Woodpeckers and Sap suckers. We get many different varieties here at our feeders. Thanks for showing an Eastern version

Very pretty!
ReplyDeleteA nice pic of him, Lea!
ReplyDeleteThey also like to lick the sugar water from the hummingbird feeder if it is sitting on a handrail where they can sit comfortably. We named our's Woody. One day Woody had a little one behind him (teaching him the ropes), so we named it "Chip" as in "a chip off the old "Woody" block. Corny, I know.

They are stunning, aren't they? I haven't seen any recently, but I haven't been watching the feeders as much this year. Great photo!
