American Coots, January 30, 2019

Wild Bird Wednesday and My Corner of the World

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, January 6, 2019
American Coot, Fulica americana. I could not get photos as good as I would like to have as they were in constant motion, eating something floating on the surface of the water. Their usual diet consists of aquatic plants, insects, snails, and tadpoles.

American Coots can be found across much of North America in freshwater wetlands. Some American Coots migrate and others stay in the same area all year. Here in our part of the southeastern United States they are migratory birds, visiting us only in the Winter.

I hope you have a wonderful day!

  1. Beautiful birds! We have coots here in Germay, too - looking a bit different.

    1. No, not a Pied-billed Grebe, though there are certain similarities between Coots and Grebes.
I use the Cornell Lab of Ornithology website to ID birds. Here is their info on Pied-billed Grebes if you are interested.
