Moonflower, Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA |
The Moonflower vine, Ipomoea alba, opens its blooms at sunset and closes them at dawn. (They may stay open longer on cloudy days). I made this photo about an hour after sunset using my macro lens at 1/30 sec. The light source? An ordinary household flashlight held by my husband!

That is a dramatic shot. We have its cousins here but all open during the day, maybe i havent seen a moonflower yet. When i take photos of the moths on hoyas at night i had a penlight held in my mouth while taking the focus as much as possible to the flower! It is better to have a husband holding the flashlight as, trust me, it is not easy holding with the mouth.
ReplyDeleteFabulous shot! And congratulations on marrying a patient man!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderfully lit picture. never seen one of those flowers.

Full moon!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! :-)
ReplyDeleteStunning photo!! Great job!
ReplyDeleteWonderful Lea. We have night-blooming flowers near where we live in the winter (in Florida) and I've been able to get pictures only by getting up very early at first light just before they close. It's great you were able to do it at actual night. Maybe I can remember to try your technique next season (my husband would probably cooperate ;>)
ReplyDeleteWow. How beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYour Moonflower is magnificent Lea and you have captured it through the lens beautifully!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic photo! I have always wanted to plant moonflowers, yet never have. Your bloom makes me want to remedy that next year.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photography! Your moonflower is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful capture. And I could so see asking my husband to hold a flashlight for a nighttime picture, except that my iPhone (I haven't used a "regular" camera for years) doesn't seem to do well with nighttime shots.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful flower! Nice job on the lighting!
ReplyDeleteNow that's impressive. Wonderful shot!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful - flower and photo :)
