Chipping Sparrow, May 18, 2016

ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday
S is for Sparrows - small brown and grey songbirds
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, May 2, 2016
Chipping Sparrows, Spizella passerina, are wide-spread across the United States and Canada. Migratory birds, they winter in the southern US and Mexico. Seeds are their main food source, though they eat insects in the Summer. They like to line their nests with hair, and have been known to pluck hair from sleeping dogs!

Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

  7. In my garden I have lots of sparrows too – but the normal house sparrow, Passer domesticus. They are here all year round along with the tree sparrows, the Dunnocks. I don’t think I have seen a Chipping Sparrow before, lovely photo of it.

  8. Our chippies are long gone north toward their nesting grounds. They are one of my favorite winter visitors, the smallest and cutest of the sparrow family.
