Ospreys, March 9, 2016

Wild Bird Wednesday, Wednesday Waters, and ABC Wednesday,

Wild Bird Wednesday and Wednesday Waters
Pickwick Dam, Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, March 7, 2016

On Monday we drove up to Pickwick on the Tennessee River to check on the bird population. We saw only a few Gulls and Herons, but the great news is ...

High above the dam, the Ospreys are nesting again! Last year we saw only one baby bird in the nest. Let's hope for two this year.

Ospreys, Pandion haliaetus, are fish eaters, and can be found along the coastlines, large lakes, and rivers in both North and South America.

"Surely, you don't mean me!"

(Yes, there was once a lid on the bird feeder, but a raccoon tore it off).

Have a wonderful day!

  7. Don't the squirrels hibernate? We don't have them here in New Zealand.

    1. Good question! Squirrels here in the USA do not hibernate. They spend the Summer months gathering and hiding food to have a good supply for the Winter. Several squirrels will share a nest in the Winter, snuggled up together to conserve body heat. They do sleep a lot in the Winter, venturing out of the nest to find their hidden food. Then they scamper back to the nest to get warm and sleep again.
And I am in the southern part of the country where our Winters are not severe, so we see squirrels more often and for longer periods of time than people who live in the colder areas.
Thanks for your visit and comment!

  8. It is sad that they have to build their nests on a steel structure.

  11. Lovely photos of the ospreys! These are birds we don't have in my area, so they're fascinating to see. We do have ornery squirrels, too, however:)
