Birds and Bees and Turtles, December 30-31, 2014

Wild Bird Wednesday, ABC Wednesday and Outdoor Wednesday
Wild Turkeys, December 25, 2014, Prentiss county, Mississippi
We often see wild turkeys in the fields after the crops are harvested.  Turkey hunting is popular with bow and arrow enthusiasts during the 6 week Spring hunting season and a 4 week season in the Autumn.  The Mississippi Department of Wildlife estimates our state's wild turkey population to be 250,000 birds.

Y is for Yellow Jacket
Yellow Jacket on the side of my car, November 28, 2014
We think of Yellow Jackets as bees, but actually they are wasps.  I was very surprised to see this one so late in the year, as they are a lot more common during the warm weather months. Their sting is painful, but not dangerous except to people who are allergic.

Outdoor Wednesday
Pond at Old Town Overlook, Natchez Trace Parkway near Tupelo, MS, USA
The weather on Christmas Day was so nice that turtles came out to sun themselves, giving me a great opportunity to use my new camera: a Canon PowerShot SX520 HS.

Happy New Year!

  1. Great photos. I loved the turtles out on a log sunning themselves. I hope you have fun with your new camera - my first serious bird camera was a Canon Powershot - but a good few years ago now and I am sure their cameras are even better now.

  7. Wild Turkeys are fun to spot out in the wild. I hope they at least eat them....although I've heard they don't taste quite the same as our local store bought ones:) Happy New Year!

  8. Great pictures, oddly you see those Turtles in ponds in the UK where people who have had them as pets have released them when they got to big to look after.

  9. Hello Lea, My Mom and Dad were born and raised in Mississippi, I still have relatives there and we visit often. I was born in MS, but never lived there. Mom and Dad had just moved to New Orleans and she preferred the MS hospital. Thanks for visiting me and writing. Your nature photos are beautiful!

  15. The turkeys are so cute, I like the way the sun lights up their red wattles. I'm also surprised to see the yellow jacket out so late.

  16. You know how much I love seeing our urban wild turkeys -- they don't know how lucky they are to escape the hunting seasons. Love the turtles, too.
