Yellow Ironweed, Verbesina alternifolia

Yellow Ironweed, sometimes called Crownbeard, is native to eastern North America
and blooms in the late Summer and early Autumn.

It grows in sun or partial shade, and attracts bees and butterflies.

Sassafras albidum

One of the first trees to show Autumn color here is the Sassafras.

Three leaf patterns

The Sassafras is unusual in that there are three distinct leaf patterns all on the same plant:
Un-lobed (oval), bi-lobed (mitten shaped), and tri-lobed (three pronged).

The most interesting thing I have to report for this October Bloom Day is that my
Butterflyweed, after blooming all Summer and producing hundreds of seeds, is budding again!
I hope there is time for blooms before the weather gets too cold.

Cooler Weather, October 10-11, 2013

There were plenty of dark clouds last Sunday, but only a drizzle of rain.
Just as sunset was near, the sun broke through the clouds.
As the rain clouds moved out, cooler temperatures moved in.
Autumn is definitely here!
