I am thankful that we did not have any damage from Tropical Storm Olga, and thankful that we were without electricity for less than 24 hours. In some areas it was a couple of days before power was restored.

Wild Bird Wednesday and My Corner of the World

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, October 27, 2019

Double-crested Cormorants, Phalacrocorax auratus, are migratory birds whose crests are present only during breeding season. They come to us here in the southeastern United States to spend the Winter before going back north in the Spring to nest. They eat a wide variety of fish, diving, chasing, and catching them underwater. (Note the sharp hook on the end of the bill).

Q is for Quilts - handmade bed covers

I have a dozen or so quilts made by my husband's mother and grandmother. Here are a few.

I think this quilt was made by my husband's grandmother. I am not sure of its age, but I am thinking it was probably made in the 1970's. Her favorite color was red!

My mother-in-law made this one. She knew the names of all the patterns, but I have forgotten.

I know this one is newer than the others because it is machine-quilted.

The Barn Collective and All Seasons

Tropical Storm Olga came through our area this weekend giving us over 2 inches of rain and knocking out our electric power from noon Saturday until Sunday morning. It blew most of the leaves off our fruit trees, but the leaves of the Sweet Gum trees behind the barn are still holding on.

We started celebrating my birthday a few days early with a trip to Florence, Alabama to eat lunch, and afterward we enjoyed a nature park and walking trail along the Tennessee River.

4. Chipmunk (Saturday's Critters)

Chipmunks are primarily North American rodents (with one species in Asia). They are ground foragers, but can climb trees to get acorns. They are omnivores, eating seeds, nuts, grass, worms, mushrooms, insects, and small amphibians. And they are very good at camouflage, blending in with their environment!

I am thankful for Wildflowers!

I found Blue Mistflower blooming beside our barn. I don't remember ever seeing it before, and I had to look at a wildflower website to identify it. I guess I can thank the birds for planting it there!

Blue Mistflower, Conoclinium coelestinum, is a member of the Aster family of plants, and is also known as Wild Ageratum. The plants bloom in the late Summer or early Autumn in the eastern United States and may be found as far west as Nebraska and Texas.
