N is for Northern Cardinal - a North American songbird commonly called a Redbird

Northern Cardinals are non-migratory birds found primarily in the eastern half of the United States, and also widespread across Mexico. Here in Mississippi, they are probably the first birds pointed out to young children, "Look! See the pretty Redbird!" It is only when we are older that we learn its proper name: Northern Cardinal, Cardinalis cardinalis.

Northern Cardinals eat insects, seeds, and fruit. If you live within their range, you can attract them to your yard by filling feeders with sunflower seeds and planting shrubs that produce fruit. This one is feeding in our blackberry thicket on the dried berries (really just seeds, but they seem to like them).

A new mural must mean that another business is coming to this building that has been vacant for awhile. It has been home to several different restaurants over the past 40 years.

I don't like this mural, but I guess it may appeal to younger people.

Have you heard of couples putting locks on wire fences and throwing away the key to symbolize their everlasting love for each other? Same idea here, just a bit different!

A bright red heart mounted on a pole makes the Love Locks into a piece of art.

Our skies continue to range from totally clear to partly cloudy. September was hot and very dry.

3. Good Food!

At Legends Steakhouse, our meals began with a trip to their salad bar. There were the usual salad ingredients plus broccoli salad, pasta salad, and fruit. And did you notice? An oval plate, not just a bowl!

And then Hawaiian Grilled Chicken (2 chicken breasts) with grilled pineapple and teriyaki sauce, baked potato with butter and sour cream, and a basket of flakey rolls. Delicious!
No, I did not eat it all - I took leftovers home, though my husband ate every bite of his meal!

Thankful Thursday and Little Things Thursday

I am thankful to have flowers that bloom in the Autumn! This is a Confederate Rose Hibiscus, Hibiscus mutabilis. They are tall perennials with large pink blooms that get darker as they age.

Here is the same bloom a day later with a new freshly opened bloom behind it. The legend behind the name 'Confederate Rose' is that the blooms turn as red as the blood shed by Confederate soldiers in the American Civil War (1861-1865).

Then the next day, the first bloom has dropped to the ground, the second day's bloom is turning red, and a new bloom is open!

M is for Mockingbird - a slender, medium-sized songbird

The Northern Mockingbird, Mimus polyglottos, is the only Mockingbird commonly found in North America. It is white underneath, and has a grey head, back, wings, and tail. A few white feathers in its wings and tail are more visible in flight. Mockingbirds are so named because of their ability in mimic other bird songs. If you think you hear a chorus of different birds, it may be just one Mockingbird!
