Saturday's Critters and Camera Critters

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, August 29, 2017
I saw this Groundhog, Marmota monax, on the front lawn of a house in town.

Shiloh, Tennessee, USA, September 11, 2017
As soon as this turtle saw me, it ducked back under the water before I could get a better photo. It was in a small, shallow pond, but the water was very murky.

Tishomingo County, Mississippi, USA, April 29, 2017
Though it may look like this snake was right under my feet, I was a safe distance away.
The mighty power of a zoom lens!

Have a great week-end!

Willy Nilly Friday, October 6, 2017

Willy Nilly Friday 5, Sky Watch Friday, and Good Fences

1. Autumn's Chill (Sky Watch Friday)
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, October 2, 2017
It was a cool, windy day with misting rain when we met friends for lunch at the Pickwick Inn Restaurant on Monday. The restaurant overlooks Pickwick Lake with a view of the dam.

This Great Blue Heron seemed to be feeling the chill in the air, too.

2. River Traffic
On the Tennessee River near Pickwick Dam, October 2, 2017
After we drove across Pickwick Dam, we were surprised to see several Cabin Cruisers on the Tennessee River.

Is this one large enough to be called a yacht?

4. Outside the Fence! (Good Fences Around The World)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 2, 2017
When driving along country roads you must watch for animals. This cow escaped her pasture and crossed the road right in front of us! We went to the farmhouse to tell the farmer that one of his cows was out, but there was no one home.

5. Farming: Soybeans
Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, October 2, 2017
When we were in Tennessee on Monday, we saw vast fields of soybeans (soya beans) almost ready for harvest. When the leaves die and fall off the plants, the Combines (harvesting machines) will be driven through the fields to gather the beans.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 3, 2017
The soybean harvest has already started here in northeast Mississippi. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, "The soybean is economically the most important bean in the world, providing vegetable protein for millions of people and ingredients for hundreds of chemical products." Source: Soybean

Fishing Poles, October 5, 2017

Signs, Signs, Thankful Thursday, and Little Things Thursday

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, October 2, 2017
I am thankful that I live out in the country where all you need to go fishing is a bamboo pole,
a line, a hook, and a few worms for bait. Out where even bobbers and sinkers are optional equipment!

To paraphrase John Denver's song, "Thank God I'm a country girl!"

I hope you have a beautiful day!

American Coots, October 4, 2017

Wild Bird Wednesday and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, October 2, 2017
The American Coots, Fulica americana, have returned - a sure sign cold weather is on its way!

In the southwestern part of the United States, Coots are all-year residents. Here in the southeast the Coots are migratory, going farther north to nest and raise their young before returning to us in the Autumn. Look for them feeding on aquatic plants around the edges of lakes, marshes and ponds.

Have a wonderful day!
