Great Blue Herons,
Ardea herodias, are the largest North American Herons. Because of special vertebrae in their necks, Herons are able to draw their necks back into an S shape.

They stand motionless or move slowly through shallow water, stalking their prey. Then they strike fast as lightening to catch a fish. They also eat amphibians, reptiles, small mammals and insects.

On cloudy days Great Blue Herons may appear to be a dull gray, but on a sunny day you can see their dark blue feathers that are even more noticeable when they fly.

We used to have a lot of them where I lived before... they used to come up to our yard for voles,take them down to the creek and drown them and then swallowed them.
