Beautyberry July 6, 2013

Pollinating the Beautyberry, Callicarpa americana

Beautyberry blooms at the base of its leaves,
and is an important source of nectar for bees and butterflies.
Birds eat the clusters of purple berries that follow after the bloom.

  1. "Beautyberry" - What a wonderful name that myabe says all there is to know about the plant? Are beautyberrrys edible for humans and if "yes" should we?

    1. Hi Phil,
      According to Wikipedia, the rather sour berries can be made into wine and jelly; but no, I would not. I think it is best to leave them for the wildlife.

  2. I don't recall seeing a tree bloom at the base of the leaves like this... The blossoms sure are pretty, though!!!
