B is for BeautyBerry July 24, 2013

This post is for:
ABC Wednesday, Wildflower Wednesday, and Outdoor Wednesday

ABC Wednesday:
B is for Beautyberry
Beautyberry, Callicarpa, is native to North America, Central America, Asia, and Australia.
A medium-sized shrub, it will grow in sun or shade if there is adequate moisture.
.
Wildflower Wednesday:
American Beautyberry, Callicarpa americana, is native to the southeastern United States.
Blooming in mid-summer, the delicate pink blooms attract small bees and flies.
.
Clusters of purple berries form in the Autumn.
They provide winter food for birds and small mammals.
.
Outdoor Wednesday:
July is unusual this year in that we have plenty of rain.
As a bonus, rain clouds give us interesting sunsets.
Those streaks of light shining upward from the sun are called Crepuscular Rays.
.
Have a wonderful Wednesday!

  1. I love beautyberry. Just wish I could enjoy the berries more before the critters ate them up. Well, I guess that is what they are for anyway!

  5. I added a Beautyberry to one of my garden areas a few years ago, and it has quickly become one of my favorite shrubs. Such a beauty in the fall! Beautiful sky shot!

  8. I enjoyed your beauty berry photos and the one of the sky was spectacular! I have a couple beauty berry shrubs that were already planted before our tree had to be cut down, and I had filled most of the area with other native plants. Some of them are taller, so I am not as thrilled with the location of these as I was, but they are OK. I'm glad they seem to get a little larger each year.

  9. Our beautyberries haven't bloomed since their first year. I think I need to move them into more sun. Nice healthy little shrubs, but no flowers or beautiful berries. Great photos Lea!

  10. Hello Lea, thanks for dropping by my site. I love your shots, but that purple berry is so lovely even as ornamentals, not just weeds.

  11. The Beautyberries are such a lovely color. I suppose the equivalent up here would be Snowberries. The sunset is spectacular!
